Troubleshoot Activities Missing in the Activity Timeline

Troubleshoot Activities Missing in the Activity Timeline

If an activity record doesn’t appear in the Activity Timeline, verify that the required configuration and visibility settings are correctly set up. The requirements and potential solutions vary for a standard and custom activity.

Required Editions

Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: Enterprise and Unlimited Editions with Life Sciences Cloud, Life Sciences Cloud for Customer Engagement Add-on license, and the Life Sciences Customer Engagement managed package.

Standard Activities

If a supported standard activity, such as a Visit, Life Sciences Email, Survey Response, Inquiry, or Assessment Task, is missing from the timeline, check these common configurations.

  • Required Timestamps: Each activity type uses a specific timestamp field to determine its position and visibility in the timeline. If the required timestamp field for an activity is blank, the record does not display. To identify the correct field for each activity type, see Activities Supported by the Activity Timeline.
  • Activity Status: Activities appear in the timeline only if the values in their Status field (or Email Status for emails) are configured in the Activity Timeline settings. If a record’s status is not included in your configured status list, the activity is hidden. Example: If you only configure display text for the Planned status of a Visit, then visits with a Completed status will not appear. To update your settings, see Configure Activity Timeline Display Text.
  • Object Permissions and Sharing: Your users can only view activities for which they have the appropriate object-level access and sharing permissions. If a user cannot see a specific record, verify your Salesforce sharing model and territory configurations. For details on how sharing impacts the timeline, see Shared Activity Visibility in the Activity Timeline.

Custom Activities

If a custom activity does not appear in the timeline, verify the underlying metadata and object relationships.

  • Container Object Picklist Values: The Entity Type picklist field on your container custom object must include an active value that matches the API name of the custom activity object. If the API names do not match or the value is inactive, the link between the activity and the timeline fails. For setup instructions, see Set Up the Custom Activity Container Object.
  • Mobile Metadata Cache (Mobile Only): To display custom activities in the mobile app, you must configure the Object Metadata Cache with the Type set to Data for both the container custom object and the custom activity object.
