Configure Dependent Picklists for Visits

Filter the picklist values that field users see during visits based on a controlling field value. Configure standard field dependencies so that dependent picklist fields show only relevant options when users select a controlling field value. Users see fewer irrelevant options and can log information more efficiently.

Before you configure dependent picklists, make sure that the picklist fields you want to use as controlling and dependent fields exist on the object.

These areas of the Visit Engagement page support dependent picklists:

  • Visit header (provider visit object)
  • Provider visit product discussions
  • Custom objects related to the visit

Dependent picklists use a controlling field to filter the values available in one or more dependent fields. The controlling field can be a checkbox or a single-select picklist, while the dependent field can be a single-select or multi-select picklist.

Dependent picklist filtering works alongside record-type-based picklist restrictions. If a record type limits the available picklist values, field dependencies filter within that restricted set.

  1. From the object management settings for the object where you want to configure the dependency, go to Fields & Relationships.
  2. Select Field Dependencies.
  3. Click New.
  4. Select the controlling field and the dependent field.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. In the dependency matrix, select which dependent values are available for each controlling field value.
    Each column represents a controlling field value. Each row represents a dependent field value. Include a value in the column to make it available when that controlling value is selected.
  7. Save your changes.
  8. To sync changes to the Life Sciences Cloud mobile app, generate the metadata cache for the objects that you added dependencies to. See Generate Metadata Cache.

When a user selects a value in the controlling field, the dependent picklist shows only the values mapped to that selection. If the controlling field has no value selected, users can't select a value in the dependent field. If the user changes the controlling field value, the dependent field resets only when the previously selected value is no longer valid for the new controlling field value.
