Create an Import Definition Without Performing an Import
Follow these steps to create an import definition for later use in Contact Builder. Create this import definition to use via an API call later.
- Click Create and choose a data extension or list as a destination for your data.
- Click Skip Upload.
- Set the attributes for the file to import.
- To upload a compressed file, choose Compressed.
- To upload an encrypted file, choose Encrypted. Provide the settings for the file encryption to use this option.
- Choose the delimiting character with the Delimiter buttons.
- Choose the appropriate date format in the Date Format dropdown menu.
- Select how to process the imported information.
- Add Only
- Update Only
- Add and Update
- Select any import options in the Import Options section.
- To continue the import process even after encountering any bad data in the files, choose Skip rows in the import file with bad data.
- To treat any values between double quotes as text, choose Respect double quotes as a text qualifier.
- Click Next.
- Map the attributes in your .csv file to the attributes in your
account:.
- Map by Header Row
- Map by Ordinal
- Click Next.
- Enter a name for the new import definition in the Definition Name field.
- Note the assigned external key for your new definition in the External Key field. Use the assigned key or manually enter a key of your own. Each import definition must use a unique external key.
- Enter a brief description of the import definition in the Definition Description field.
- Enter the pattern used to create the import file in the File Naming Pattern field. You can either enter a specific file name or use a wildcard to use the most recent version of a file in the import definition. For example, if the filename always includes the most recent date, click Add Wildcard and add wildcards for the year, month, and day - filename%%Year%%%%Month%%%%Day%%.
- Enter the information under the Import Qualifications header.
- To skip the import process when less than a certain amount of time elapsed since the last import, choose Skip if last export was less than X hours ago. Place your specified number of hours in the text field.
- To import the most current information possible, choose Fail if file is older that X hours and place your specified number of hours in the first text field. You can also add a system buffer time in the second text field to give the system time to account for servers in different time zones.
- Enter the email addresses to receive notification when the import completes in the Notifications text box. Place either a comma or semi-colon between each email address.
- Click Create.
