Step-up authentication is the process of reauthenticating with multi-factor
authentication before performing specific tasks. In accounts where admins can log in with a
username and password, Marketing Cloud Engagement enforces step-up authentication when an admin
tries to make certain critical changes. For example, an admin must reauthenticate before they
can edit the security settings for an account.

Step-up authentication occurs even if the admin logged in recently. This mandatory security
feature can’t be turned off.
