Add the Coupons Tab to the Marketing App

If you don't see the Coupons tab when you log in to Marketing Cloud Next, add it to the Marketing app navigation.

  1. In the tab bar, click the pencil icon (A pencil, which indicates that you can edit an item or property.).
  2. On the Edit Marketing App Navigation Items window, click Add More Items.
  3. On the Add Items window, next to Coupons, click the plus icon (Add an item to a selection) and click Add 1 Nav Item.
  4. Save your changes.

Create a Coupon List

Create a coupon list to hold the unique codes that you send to recipients. Each coupon list contains a set of coupon codes.

  1. In the Marketing app, go to the Coupons tab and click New.
  2. For Type, select Multi-Code.

Coupon lists are of type multi-code, which is the only coupon type available in Marketing Cloud Next. You can't change the coupon type after you create the coupon list.

  3. Add a unique name for your coupon list.
  4. If necessary, add a value, promotion, and description for the coupon list.
The value indicates the coupon discount. For example, 30% off or Buy One Get One. You can't change the promotion after you create the coupon list.
  5. Set the Status to control whether the coupon list is active.
Only codes from active coupon lists are assigned to recipients.
  6. Select a Business Unit if your org uses more than one.
This field doesn't appear if your org doesn't have any business units. You can't change the business unit after you create the coupon list.
  7. To have every send assign a new code even for recipients who already received one, select Always assign a new coupon code.
When this setting is turned off, a recipient receives the same coupon code on later sends. When it's enabled, the recipient receives a new code in each send. This setting is off by default.
  8. In the Active Period section, set the Start Date Time and End Date Time to define when the coupon list is active.
  9. Save your changes.

After you save the coupon list, upload coupon codes.

Upload Coupon Codes

Add codes to a coupon list by importing a CSV file.

  1. In the Marketing app, open the coupon list record page and click Upload Coupon Codes.
  2. Prepare a CSV file with a single column that uses the header CouponCode and a unique code in each row.
To get started, download the sample file and use it to create your CSV file.
  3. Click Upload CSV File, select your CSV, and then click Upload.
  4. Wait for the import to finish.
Large files are imported in batches. You're notified in the org and by email when the import completes.

To review the individual codes, open the Coupon Codes tab on the coupon list record. It shows details such as the coupon code, when it was created, its assigned date, and its assignee.

Add a Coupon List to Content

Add a coupon list to your marketing content as a data source, and then insert a coupon code merge field.

Note
Note The coupon list that you reference in content must belong to the same business unit as the content.
  1. Open the content in the Content Builder, go to the Data Sources tab and click Add.
  2. For Type, select Coupon Data Provider.
  3. Enter a Name for the data source.
  4. For Coupon List, select the coupon list to get the codes from.
You can select active and inactive coupon lists in your content. However, make sure that the coupon list is active before you send the content.
  5. Save the data source.
  6. Add the coupon list attributes as a merge field to your content.
You can select coupon code, description, value, start date, end date, and status as merge fields. See Personalize Content with Merge Fields in Marketing Cloud Next.

You can also add content and scripting in code view. For example,

    {{set "coupon" (assignCoupon list="C-000000002")}} Your coupon code is {{get @root.coupon "Code"}} Status: {{get @root.coupon "Status"}} Description: {{get @root.coupon "Description"}} Value: {{get @root.coupon "Value"}} Valid From: {{get @root.coupon "StartDateTime"}} Valid Until: {{get @root.coupon "EndDateTime"}}
See Create an Email in Code View in Marketing Cloud Next.
  7. Preview and test your content.
For details about previewing and testing an email, see Create an Email in Marketing Cloud Next.
When you preview or test the message, the coupon code merge field is replaced with a randomly selected code from the coupon list so that you can confirm the layout. Coupon codes used in preview can be reused, but the codes used in a test send count toward usage and aren't assigned to recipients in later sends.

You can't delete a coupon list that's referenced in any marketing content.

Note
Note A message send fails when the coupon codes are exhausted or the coupon list has expired. To make sure that each recipient gets a valid and unique code, upload more codes to the coupon list or extend its date range.
