          Functional Subdomains in Unified Messaging

          Functional Subdomains in Unified Messaging

After you send an email, Email Service Providers (ESPs) and subscribers communicate back to the sender for scenarios, such as bounces, replies, or unsubscribes. To manage these inbound communications, Unified Messaging uses functional subdomains.

          Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: Salesforce Enterprise and Unlimited Editions for Service Cloud AND Enterprise and Unlimited Editions with Marketing Cloud Next Growth and Advanced Editions
Not supported in Government Cloud Plus

A functional subdomain is a prefix added to your authenticated sending domain that routes specific inbound mail types to the correct Salesforce-managed infrastructure.

Inbound Use Case Functional Subdomain (Prefix) Purpose
Reply handling reply Routes recipient replies to Salesforce’s reply-handling servers
Bounce handling bounce Receives asynchronous bounce notifications from Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
Unsubscribe handling leave Processes unsubscribe requests from recipients

If your authenticated sending domain is marketing.yourcompany.com, Unified Messaging automatically handles these subdomains:

          • reply.marketing.yourcompany.com
          • bounce.marketing.yourcompany.com
          • leave.marketing.yourcompany.com

To ensure these subdomains route correctly, create CNAME records in your DNS provider that map each functional subdomain to Salesforce-managed inbound mail servers.
