A US Short Code is a 5- or 6-digit number designed for high-volume enterprise messaging, offering maximum delivery rates and message throughput in the United States. Short codes are manually vetted and pre-approved by wireless carriers, which minimizes carrier spam filtering. They support a default speed of 100 messages per second (MPS), which can be scaled up to 500+ MPS for large-scale marketing campaigns or time-sensitive alerts.
To use a short code, you must complete a multi-step registration process that includes legal brand vetting and registry leasing. Each major U.S. carrier must manually configure their network and test compliance workflows, such as required HELP and STOP commands. The carrier provisioning phase typically takes 8 to 12 weeks for new short codes, or 4 to 6 weeks when migrating an existing code.
