Create a Masking Policy

Here’s how to create an initial masking policy to begin addressing your masking use case needs.

Required Editions

Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: Professional, Enterprise, Unlimited, and Developer Editions with the Salesforce Data Mask add-on license.
User Permissions Needed
To create a masking policy:
  • Data Mask And Seed User Permission Set License
  • Data Mask And Seed User Permission Set

Access Data Mask & Seed’s Policies tab to create, view, edit, and delete masking policies for your production org, your sandboxes or both. Start by creating your initial version of a masking policy. After initial creation, you can always edit the policy and make enhancements to comprehensively address your masking use case needs.

Important
Important Data Mask & Seed can mask object fields that are encrypted with Shield Platform Encryption’s Field Level Encryption (FLE). Note that masking processing modifies such object fields’ actual value saved in the Salesforce database, which results in a new encrypted data value.

To create an initial masking policy:

  1. In either a sandbox or your production org, select the Policies tab. The Policies page opens in the All Policies view.
    When no masking policies are currently defined for the sandbox/production org, the Policies page displays empty.
  2. In the Policies page, select New Policy.
  3. In the New Policy dialog, enter the policy name, optionally enter a policy description and select Continue.
  4. In the Add Objects dialog, add objects to the policy by selecting each object’s associated plus sign (+). Control the list of objects that the dialog shows, as follows:
    1. Select to display objects of any type (both standard objects and custom objects)
    2. Select to display only standard objects
    3. Select to display only custom objects
    4. Select to also include the display of unsupported objects of the selected object type (unsupported standard objects, unsupported custom objects, or both)
  5. After selecting a minimum of one object to add to your policy, select the Add button. The UI displays the policy page.
  6. The policy is in Edit mode and you can modify its content.
  7. n the policy page, select Save to save the new masking policy. Unsaved changes are lost when you navigate away from the page.
  8. After saving, the masking policy is now in view-only mode.
