Upgrade Lightning Sync from Exchange Web Services to Microsoft Graph

Microsoft announced the retirement of Exchange Web Services (EWS) for Microsoft Office 365 starting October 2026. Lightning Sync configurations that use EWS won’t sync data after this retirement. To avoid service disruption, upgrade to the Microsoft Graph authentication method in Lightning Sync setup now.

Available to set up from: Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience
Available in: Professional, Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, and Developer Editions with Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, and Lightning Platform
User Permissions Needed
To access and edit Lightning Sync setup:

Manage Users

AND

Manage Lightning Sync

Before you begin, confirm that your Azure admin has granted org-wide Microsoft Graph API access and permissions. See App ID for Microsoft Graph Authentication. The admin setting up the connection from Microsoft required a DirectoryRole of a Global Admin, Cloud Application Admin, or Application Admin permission.

Note Einstein Activity Capture and Lightning Sync use the same app ID links for Microsoft Graph authentication.

You can’t migrate Lighting Sync to Einstein Activity Capture if EWS is your authentication method. You must upgrade to Microsoft Graph before you can migrate to Einstein Activity Capture.

  1. From Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Sync. Then, select Outlook Integration and Sync.
  2. In the Lightning Sync section, click Upgrade to Miscrosoft Graph.Upgrade from EWS to Graph with the flow found on the Lightning Sync settings.
  3. In the Authentication Mapping window, click Next.
  4. In the Connect Salesforce to Microsoft Office 365 window, click Log In. Log in to your Microsoft account to connect.
  5. In the Microsoft authentication window, log in. Your tenant ID is automatically added to the Salesforce upgrade window.
  6. Optionally, test the connection.
  7. Click Finish to complete the upgrade to Microsoft Graph.Click Finish to close the window and run the upgrade to Microsoft Graph for Lightning Sync.

Microsoft 365 authentication upgrades to Microsoft Graph for the entire org. No action is needed from individual users.

When you’re done, you can continue to use Lightning Sync, but we recommend migrating to Einstein Activity Capture. Lightning Sync is scheduled to retire in 2027.
