          Configure Locations for Asset-Based Tracking

          Configure Locations for Asset-Based Tracking

Configure locations for asset-based tracking to manage internal IT assets directly without relying on serialized product models. Defining the inventory model at the location level makes sure you use consistent tracking logic and simplifies transfer workflows.

          Required Editions

          Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited Editions with Agentforce IT Service.
          User Permissions Needed
          To configure locations: Customize Application
To create or edit locations: Create and Edit on Locations

Before you set up asset-based tracking, verify that the location contains no product items. The system restricts field modifications after you link inventory records to a location.

          1. From App Launcher, find and select IT Hardware Asset Management.
          2. Select Locations, and then click New or Edit an existing location.
          3. Enter a location name, and select a location type.
          4. Select Inventory Location.
            Note
Note This setting is required to turn on the asset based usage type.
          5. From the Serialized Inventory Tracking Method picklist, select Asset Based.
          6. Click Save.
            Tip
Tip Select the asset-based model for stockrooms that distribute internal company hardware like employee laptops and mobile phones.

          Considerations for Location Tracking Types

          • Read-Only Configurations: After a product item links to a location, tracking configuration fields become read-only to make sure that you maintain data integrity.
          • Product Transfer Requirements: The system permits transfers only between locations that share identical inventory models. Mismatched location tracking types block the transfer.
          • Consumable Workflows: Non-serialized products don't use asset-based tracking logic. Lightweight consumables maintain standard inventory behaviors automatically.
