          Location Usage Types

          Location Usage Types

Define your inventory model directly at the location level to manage your IT Asset Management (ITAM) framework. A centralized location model ensures consistent data logic for all stored items. This centralized approach simplifies inventory transfers, reduces configuration maintenance, and prevents user errors.

          Inventory Models

The Location Usage Type governs inventory rollups, product transfers, and system behaviors.

Location Usage Type Use Case Inventory Behavior
Asset-Based Track deployable hardware at IT service locations. The system automatically derives product item quantities from underlying asset records. Fields are read-only.
          Note
Note Serialized product tracking is the default system behavior.

          Default Asset Status Mappings

In an asset-based location, the system derives product item quantities from the underlying asset records. Predefined asset statuses map to a status category and an inventory quantity rollup. You can't change these default asset status mappings.

          Select a Location Usage Type

When you align data tracking with operational workflows, selecting a specific tracking model provides distinct operational benefits.

          • Consistent Data Logic: Defining the tracking model at the location level ensures uniform system logic. This centralized architecture reduces your overall configuration footprint.
          • Granular Visibility: Asset-based locations track aggregate quantity metrics on the product item record in real time. Instantly view assets on hand, in transit, allocated, on hold, or damaged.
          • Transfer Integrity: Validation rules prevent data mismatches across sites. Product transfers complete successfully when source and destination locations share tracking logic.

          Special Handling for Consumables

The Location Usage Type applies exclusively to serialized products and assets. Non-serialized products maintain default inventory behaviors.

          • Backward Compatibility: Non-serialized consumable items track standard metrics regardless of location settings.
          • Reduced Overhead: Consumable products don’t separate asset and serialized models. This architectural distinction prevents downstream workflow disruptions.

          Mixed-Use Sites

Physical facilities often store both deployable IT assets and general technician parts. Defining your tracking model at the location level ensures clean data separation between departments. This choice eliminates complex configuration tracking at the individual product level.

          Considerations for Location Usage Types

To prevent system errors and data corruption, review these critical rules before you update a location:

          • Inventory Rule: Designate a stockroom or storage site as an inventory location before you run asset transactions.
          • Field Restrictions: The system locks the Location Usage Type after a product item links to that location. To modify tracking logic, remove all associated product items first.
