What It Does
Stage management provides predefined templates to streamline the change request process. These templates include preconfigured stages, allow stage transitions and recommended tasks for each stage. After you’ve captured the stages, transitions, and tasks, you can define a stage assignment rule. Assign stages to different types of changes:
- Emergency changes: Urgent changes that arise from an unexpected error and require immediate attention
- Standard changes: Low-risk, frequently repeated, and pre-approved changes
- Normal changes: Non-emergency changes that don’t have a defined, pre-approved process
Each change type can have its own lifecycle. You can create a stage definition and capture the transition for each stage in the setup.
Emergency Change
The stage definition for an emergency change is a predefined template with a smaller subset of stages compared to a Standard Change.
- Stages: An emergency change request goes through a defined set of stages, including New, Approved, Planning, and Closed. The template provides a simplified process for these urgent changes.
- Allowed transitions: The template defines the transitions allowed between stages. For example, from the New stage, an emergency change can move only to an Approved or Canceled status.
- Recommended tasks: The template also recommends a set of tasks for each stage. For the New stage, the predefined tasks are Initiate Emergency Change Request, Gather Initial Information, and Risk Mitigation Plans. These tasks are all defined as Manual Tasks.
Standard Change
The stage definition for a Standard Change is a predefined template that simplifies the process for low-risk, pre-approved changes.
- Stages: A standard change goes through a defined set of stages, including New, Scheduled, Open, Implementing, and Closed.
- Allowed transitions: The template defines the transitions allowed between stages, ensuring a controlled and predictable workflow.
- Recommended tasks: The template also recommends a set of tasks for each stage to ensure consistency. For the New stage, the predefined tasks are Submit Request for Change (RFC) and Initial Validation.
Normal Change
The stage definition for a normal change is a predefined template that simplifies the process for non-emergency changes without a pre-approved workflow.
- Stages: A normal change request goes through a defined set of stages, including New, Open, Approved, and Planning.
- Allowed transitions: The template defines the transitions allowed between stages, ensuring a controlled and predictable workflow.
- Recommended tasks: The template also recommends a set of tasks for each stage to ensure consistency. For the New stage, the predefined tasks are Submit Request for Change (RFC) and Initial Review.
