Create a Child Configuration Item Type

Create a Child Configuration Item Type

Create a child configuration item (CI) type in Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to manage a more specific category of assets in a parent CI type. A child CI type organizes related assets into a structured hierarchy. It applies shared attributes and rules to similar infrastructure components.

          Required Editions

          Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited Editions with Agentforce IT Service that have CMDB and Service Graph enabled.
          User Permissions Needed
To create child configuration item types: IT Service Configuration Item Type Manager

Use child CI types when you need to define subcategories within a broader asset group. For example, in a parent CI type like Workstation, you can create a child CI type called virtual workstation to track cloud-based desktops separately. This approach improves data clarity and helps teams apply consistent standards to similar assets.

          1. From the App Launcher, find and select CMDB and Service Graph.
          2. In the navigation panel, select Administration, and then select CMDB.
          3. Click CI Type Manager.
          4. In the Configuration Item Type Manager list, click the parent CI type.
          5. In the record page, click New Child Item Type, and then complete the details:
            Field Description
Name Name for the new child CI type. For example virtual workstation.
Description Description of the asset category that this child CI type represents.
Mark as Component Classification that identifies CIs of this type as parts of larger systems or services. For example, hard drive can be a component of a database server.
          6. Click Save.

The new child CI type appears in the Configuration Item Type Hierarchy section of the parent CI type's record page.
