          Create Relationships Between Configuration Items

          Create Relationships Between Configuration Items

Understand how configuration items (CIs) interact and depend on each other by creating relationships. Use the Relationships tab in a CI record to define source or target relationships. Mapping these connections helps your teams understand system dependencies, assess impact, and troubleshoot issues faster.

          Required Editions

          Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited Editions with Agentforce IT Service that have CMDB and Service Graph enabled.
          User Permissions Needed
To create relationships between configuration items: IT Service Configuration Item Owner

A source relationship indicates that the current CI connects to or depends on another CI. For example, a Linux server that depends on a storage device has a source relationship with that device.

A target relationship indicates that another CI depends on the current CI. For example, a load balancer that routes traffic to a web server creates a target relationship with that server.

          1. From the App Launcher, find and select CMDB and Service Graph.
          2. Select Configuration Items.
          3. Go to All Configuration Items or My Configuration Items, and select the CI that you want to add a relationship to.
          4. On the CI record page, go to the Relationships tab.
          5. To create a source relationship, click Add Source Relationship, and then
            complete the following details:
            Field Description
Target Item Name of the current configuration item where you’re adding the relationship.
Relationship Type of relationship to define between the configuration items. Select from predefined values such as runs on, depends on, or connected to. The predefined relationship types are managed in Configuration Item Relationship Types of the CMDB app.
          6. If you want to create a target relationship, click Add Target Relationship, and then complete the following details:
            Field Description
Source Item Name of the current configuration item where you’re adding the relationship.
Relationship Type of relationship to define between the configuration items. Select from predefined values such as runs on, depends on, or connected to. The predefined relationship types are managed in Configuration Item Relationship Types of the CMDB app.
          7. Click Save.

The relationship appears in the Relationships tab of the configuration item record.

The relationship is added to the configuration item and reflected in the service graph. Use the service graph to view how a configuration item connects to other assets across your IT landscape, assess impact, identify dependencies, and troubleshoot issues faster.
