Attendance
Attendance turns a routine administrative task into a reliable early indicator of student engagement. It gathers signals from instructors, parents, devices, and systems, applies your institutional rules, and produces a single trusted outcome for every student. Staff and advisors act on that outcome and provide student support.

How Attendance Works
Attendance signals come from across your institution. A set of records defines the attendance codes, the rules that each attendance-taking occurrence follows, and how Attendance resolves competing signals.
- Code Set
- Defines an attendance code, such as present, absent, or tardy, and standardizes attendance outcomes across the institution for reporting, analytics, and automation.
- Attendance Policy
- Defines how your institution captures, interprets, and determines attendance. An attendance policy sets rules and determines whether attendance submission is by full roster or by exception, or whether an admin or clerk can correct the attendance submission. You assign a policy to a learning program, learning course, or course offering.
- Attendance Source Type
- Identifies the system or method that captures a raw attendance signal, such as an instructor submission, a badge or card swipe, or a parent voice call.
- Attendance Policy Source Type
- Ranks each source's priority within a policy and controls whether its signals resolve automatically.
For example, Connected High School has a policy for daily homeroom attendance, with full-roster submission and a 24-hour correction window. Its code set defines present, absent, and excused. The policy ranks instructor submission first, card swipe second, and activity from a learning management system third.
In everyday operation, these records capture each student's attendance and resolve it into one trusted outcome.
- Attendance Recording
- Represents one attendance-taking event, such as a class period, a school day, or a lecture, that references a specific attendance policy.
- Attendance Entry
- Documents the official attendance status for one student in one attendance recording. The entry carries the single trusted result and connects the attendance recording to the signals that inform it.
- Attendance Source Data
- Carries the raw signal about a student's attendance from a single source, such as an instructor submission or a voice call from a parent. The source data resolves into the student's attendance entry. The entry keeps the trusted outcome, while the source data preserves the audit trail of every signal that contributes to it.
When more than one signal exists for the same student, Attendance decides which one to trust. It reads the priority ranking on a policy's source types and resolves competing signals into an official outcome on the attendance entry.
Example: Resolve Absences with a Voice Agent
You can create the Attendance Management Agent as a voice agent that gathers absence reasons directly from parents. See Attendance Management Agent.
