Model Student Grades
Use the Term Grade object to build out a high-level overview of student performance.
- Model Student Grades
Institutions typically use a learning management system (LMS) or student information system (SIS) to record periodic grade assessments, such as assignments and exams. With EDA, the focus is on creating a unified, 360-degree student profile that complements your LMS or SIS, rather than supplanting it. Use the Term Grade object to model students' major grade milestones, so that you can build out a higher-level overview of performance—in students' individual classes and in their academic track overall.

A Term Grade record captures a student's grade in a Course Offering, using your preferred grading scale—letter, numerical, or percentage grade. It can also categorize what the grade represents, such as Pass or Fail. Because Term Grades represent major grade milestones that correspond to the multiple grading periods within a Term, we can expect a single Course Offering to result in multiple Term Grade records for each student.
For example, during the Fall 2021 Term's Course Offering of Probability Theory Fundamentals, an instructor documents these Term Grade records for student, Lexi Carvalho.
Term Grade records
| Term Grade Name | Contact | Course Offering | Course Connection | Term | Type | Numerical Grade | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TG-0330 | Lexi Carvalho | DSCI-212 Fall 2021 | CC-1805 | Fall 2021 | Mid-Term Grade | 87.00000 | Pass |
| TG-0442 | Lexi Carvalho | DSCI-212 Fall 2021 | CC-1805 | Fall 2021 | Final Grade | 92.75000 | Pass |
The Term Grade object has a high degree of relatedness, in that it ties together data from a number of other objects. Besides the grade-related fields, a Term Grade record has fields that look up to the:
-
Contact record that represents the student.
-
Course Offering record that represents the instance of a Course being offered.
-
Course Connection record that represents the student's enrollment in the Course Offering.
-
Term record that's implied by the Course Offering, because a Course Offering is always related to a specific Term.
This relatedness means that after collecting Term Grade data and adding the Term Grade field to page layouts for such records as Course Offering or Contact, it's easy to see students' grades in various useful contexts. From a Course Offering record, see all the Term Grades issued to students enrolled in that running of the Course. From a Contact record like Lexi Carvalho's, see all of her Term Grades and Course Connections. And, set up reports and dashboards to proactively monitor student progress and performance.
