Automatically Generate and Maintain Household Names and Greetings in Nonprofit
Keep household account names and greetings accurate and professional as family dynamics change. Define formula-based patterns, and automatically recalculate household names whenever you add, remove, or update members. Household Naming listens for changes to household membership and member details, then recalculates names in real time.

Before you set up automatic household naming, complete these tasks:
- Turn on Group Membership.
- In Setup, under Account Settings, select Allow users to relate a contact to multiple accounts.
- Clone and activate the Recalculate Household Names on Update record-triggered flow. If your custom naming format includes fields other than LastName, FirstName, and Salutation, add those fields to the entry criteria of the cloned flow.
- Clone and activate the Recalculate Household Names on Delete record-triggered flow.
If you have an active household name template, household naming generates a name for each household account from the template's naming pattern. Household Naming looks for changes to household membership and to member details, such as first name, last name, and salutation, and then recalculates the name. You can map and activate only one template to each household account destination field at a time. You can have multiple active naming and greeting templates.
These examples show how common naming formats appear for a household with members Sam Smith and Sally Smith.

- In Setup, enter Household in the Quick Find box, and under Group Membership, select Household Naming Settings.
- Turn on Automatic Household Naming.
- To create a household naming template, click New Template.
- Enter a name for the household template.

Select the Household Account Destination Field API Name to define
the destination of the household template.
Map a template to the Account Name field for automatic household naming. For greetings, map the template to any custom text field.
Important Enable Field History Tracking for the Account object and track the fields that are destinations. Field History Tracking provides an audit trail to review or reverse automatic naming changes. For more information, see Track Object Field History. -
To use this template for household naming or greetings, select
Active.
Only one naming template per household account destination field can be active at a time. Multiple templates for household greetings mapped to custom fields can be active as well.

Format the household name by using one of these methods.
- From the Naming Pattern Formula, select a pre-defined format for the household name.
- From the Naming Pattern Formula, select Create Custom Format and enter your own format in the formula editor.

If you’re formatting a custom household name:

From the Person Account Field, select the field to use in the
greeting.
The Merge Field Value field populates with the API name of the selected field.
- From the Merge Field Value, copy the field API name and paste it into the free text area.

In the free text area, add text to complete the household greeting.
For example, Dear {each:Name}.
- To check that the syntax of your naming pattern is valid, click Check Syntax.
- To see how your custom name format renders, click Generate Preview.

From the Person Account Field, select the field to use in the
greeting.

In Name Conjunction, enter the text that joins pairs of names for
the household.
If there are three or more names, commas separate the names and the name conjunction joins the last two.
The default value is and.
For example, “John & Jane”, or “John and Jane”, or “John, Jane and Jacob” or “John, Jane & Jacob”. - In Maximum Member Count, enter the maximum number of members to include in a household name.

To replace household members beyond the maximum member count with a group term, enter the
term in Member Limit Suffix.
The default value is Friends.For example, for a three-person household with a maximum member count of two, the household name is John and Jane Smith without the suffix. With the suffix, the greeting is John and Jane Smith and Friends.

To exclude household members from automatic household naming, complete the exclusion
formula for those members and check the formula syntax before you save the template.
For example, exclude an AccountContactRelation by using CONTAINS({AccountContactRelation.Roles}, "Child"). Or, exclude a household member by using {Account.IsTemporaryHouseholdMember__pc} == TRUE

Save your changes.
Important If your formulas reference fields other than FirstName, LastName, and Salutation, add them to the entry criteria for the Recalculate Household Names on Update cloned flow.
Household Naming uses the active naming template to name new household accounts and to recalculate names when household membership or member details change. If you remove the last member of a household, Household Naming sets the household name to Anonymous Household.
