Disable NPSP Contact Role Automation
There may be instances where you need to disable the NPSP automation that creates Opportunity Contact Roles on selected Opportunities. You may wish to do this so you can create or update Contact Roles yourself, using your own business logic.
Common use cases include:
- Data migration
- ETL operations
- Custom code execution
- Custom integration
- Opportunity records where the Primary Contact needs to be updated several times. For example, on long term family foundation gifts, corporate gifts, or grants.
NPSP includes a checkbox field called Disable Contact Role Automation on the Opportunity object. When you select the field on a given record, it disables several aspects of NPSP Opportunity Contact Role automation. After you have finished making your own Contact Role updates, you may wish to deselect the field to return automation functionality to that record.
Disable Contact Role Automation disables NPSP's automatic creation of Opportunity Contact Roles when there are changes to the:
- Opportunity Primary Contact field
- Opportunity Notification Recipient Contact field
- Honoree Contact field
- Household members on the related Opportunity Account
- Related Opportunity Contact Role on Relationship records
- Related Opportunity Contact Role on Affiliation records
Disable Contact Role Automation does not disable automation related to Partial Soft Credits, Matching Gifts, automation from other installed packages, or your own customizations.
Understand Rollup Implications
Although Disable Contact Role Automation disables NPSP's automatic creation of Opportunity Contact Roles, Opportunity (Donation) rollups are not disabled. There are different implications depending on what kind of rollups your organization uses.
Customizable Rollups will rollup data to the Contact selected in the Opportunity Primary Contact field even if no Opportunity Contact Role is present. Legacy and User Defined rollups work only on Opportunity Contact Roles.
NPSP Batch Jobs
The following batch operations in NPSP Settings are not affected by the Disable Contact Role Automation field. These operations will modify Opportunity Contact Roles on Opportunities regardless of whether the Disable Contact Role Automation field is selected.
