Mark a Contact as Do Not Contact or Deceased

Mark a Contact as Do Not Contact or Deceased

At some point, you will have a contact who is deceased or a contact who has asked to be removed from your lists and not contacted again. In both of these situations, you want to remove the person from your mailing lists. For a deceased contact, you also want to make sure that the contact's name doesn't appear in the Household naming fields.

Mark a Contact as Deceased

When you mark a contact as deceased, the Do Not Contact, Do Not Call, and Email Opt Out fields are automatically selected. The deceased individual's name is removed from their Household name.

  1. In the Nonprofit Success Pack, go to the Contact record of the person that you want to mark as deceased.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Select Deceased.
  4. Save your changes.

When you save the record, Salesforce automatically selects the Do Not Contact, Do Not Call, and Email Opt Out fields.

In addition, Salesforce makes changes to the Contact's Household Account.

  • Salesforce removes the deceased Contact from Household Account Name, Formal Greeting, and Informal Greeting fields. For example, in the Sanchez and Smith Household Account, if you mark Maria Sanchez as deceased, Household Name changes to Smith Household and Formal Greeting changes from Maria Sanchez and John Smith to John Smith.
  • If you mark the Primary Contact in a Household as deceased, Salesforce automatically assigns the Household member with the earliest creation date as the Primary Contact.
  • If you mark the last living Contact in a Household as deceased, Salesforce automatically selects All Household Members Deceased on the Household Account.

If you accidentally mark a Contact as deceased, you must deselect Deceased on the Contact and manually update the value of the automatically changed fields.
