Conduct a Post-Incident Review

Conduct a Post-Incident Review

Learn how a post-incident review can identify improvements in your recovery plan to avoid extended downtime.

After an incident is resolved, take time to reflect on the incident. Conduct a post-incident review to determine the root cause and find where improvements can be made to your recovery plan.

A post-incident review is a learning opportunity to better equip your company and team to avoid similar issues in the future. During the review, be positive and focus on how the incident occurred, not who potentially caused it or why it happened. Split the review into two parts, including:

  • An after action review that looks at how the IT operations team responded to the incident and initiated the recovery process. Review and identify areas of improvement to reduce future incident recovery time.
  • A root cause analysis that identifies the cause of the incident along with any fixes or remediation that can prevent it from occurring again. Ensure that any fixes identified from the review are incorporated in your software development lifecycle for your development team to evaluate and prioritize in their backlog.
