Classify Fields in Security Center

Security Center's Field Classification tool lets you assign and manage sensitivity level and other classifications for fields across all objects in your parent and tenant orgs, individually or in bulk.

Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: Enterprise and Unlimited Editions with the Security Center add-on license.
Available for free in: Developer Edition

Easily identify which fields potentially contain sensitive or regulated data and who is responsible for that data. Maintain classifications to identify security risks, optimize data governance, spot trends, and make sure your org ecosystem meets audit and regulatory requirements. Review classifications as org data evolves or policies are updated, and address unclassified fields, which might indicate a compliance gap or audit risk.

When classifying fields, you can view all objects or individual objects, and filter and sort fields by classification attributes, such as fill rate, compliance category, and sensitivity level. A color-coded progress bar shows the distribution of all org fields across sensitivity levels, including unassigned fields. Hovering over a segment shows the level description and field count.

  • Field Classification Attributes
Before you classify fields, customize your Fields view, or filter the Fields list, make sure you understand the field classification attributes.
  • Customize Your Field Classification Fields List
Select the field attributes you need to see on the Fields list and remove the ones you don't. Object, Field, and Sensitivity Level attributes are always visible, but you can add, arrange, and remove others to get the view you want.
  • Calculate Fill Rates for Salesforce Fields
Field fill rates help identify which fields are filled on object records and how actively and consistently they're filled. Use fill rates to prioritize high-use fields to classify and identify fields that aren't used.
  • Classify Object Fields by Security Level, Compliance, and Other Attributes
Select objects whose fields you want to classify according to predefined attributes, such as sensitivity level, compliance category, and field usage. Classify fields individually or in bulk.
  • Field Classification Filters and Use Cases
Field Classification's advanced filters let you focus on the fields that matter, whether you're trying to identify high-traffic fields that carry real compliance risk or flagging empty fields that go unused and can be deprecated.
  • Filter the Fields List by Classification Attributes
Filtering the Field Classification tool's Fields list by classification attributes lets you narrow the list of fields you're working with and analyze your field security posture more efficiently. Filter by object and field attributes, and adjust field fill rate calculations.
  • Field Classification Considerations
Make sure you understand these considerations for classifying fields and configuring the Field Classification Fields list.
