Configure and Manage Custom Consumption Tags
After you determine your tagging strategy, you’re ready to begin creating custom tags and assigning them to resources.
Prerequisites:
- Make sure you have the appropriate Custom Tagging permission. See Salesforce Help: Digital Wallet Permissions for details.
- When you’re ready to create Data 360 reports or Tableau Next visualizations based on your custom tags, install the Consumption Tagging app. See Salesforce Help: Install the Consumption Tagging App for instructions.
To access the Consumption Tags tab:
- From the App Launcher, find and select Digital Wallet.
- Click the Consumption Tags tab.
Alternatively, you can search for and find Consumption Tags directly in the App Launcher.
Get Started with Custom Tagging
The Consumption Tags feature gives you flexibility regarding how you want to begin, and enables you to define any dependencies as you go. However, you must assign a tag to a tag group. If you begin defining tags first, you must select a tag group or create one when defining before you can save the tag. After you have your list of tags, you can assign them to resources.
The Consumption Tags tab has two pages: Tags and Tagged Resources. The Tags page is where you manage and create custom tags and tag groups.
The Tagged Resources page shows you a list of all resources that are tagged. From here, you can manage assignments and assign a tag to a resource.
Tag and Tag Group Naming Conventions
Follow these conventions when specifying tag and tag group names. Avoid naming tags or tag groups with personally identifiable information (PII) or company-sensitive names.
- Don’t use greater than (>) or less than (<) symbols for the tag or tag group name.
- Tags and tag group names are case-insensitive, so you can’t create
Departmentifdepartmentalready exists. - Tag and tag group names are limited to 30 characters.
- Tag group names must be unique.
- Tags must have unique names within the same tag group.
- API names for tags and tag groups must be unique.
Tag and Tag Group Limits
- You can create only 30 tag groups.
- You can create up to 255 tags per tag group.
Create a Custom Tag
When you first access the Consumption Tags tab, you see the All Tags list, which is empty. Click New Tag to define a tag. Remember that you must also define or select the tag group at the same time. Be sure to follow the tag and tag group naming conventions.
View or Manage Tag Groups
From the All Tags list, click View Tag Groups. From here, you can create tag groups, or edit or delete existing ones. You can edit a tag group if none of its tags are assigned to a resource. Deleting a tag group deletes all associated tags and unassigns them from any resources.
Assign Tags to Resources
You can assign multiple tags to a resource but only one tag from a tag group. For example, if a resource is assigned the tag Department: Sales, you can’t also assign the tag Department: Marketing to it.
In the left navigation panel, click Tagged Resources, then click Assign Tag to Resource. See Salesforce Help: Manage and Report on Business-Specific Custom Tags for a list of resources you can assign to your custom tags.
Unassign a Tag from a Resource
From the Tagged Resources page, select Unassign Tag from the row action menu. If you unassign a tag from a resource, you still see past usage events for the resource. This change affects only future events.
Edit a Tag
From the Tags page, select Edit from the row action menu. If the tag is assigned to a resource, you can edit its name and description. If the tag isn’t assigned to a resource, you can edit its name, description, and tag group. Future consumption is tagged with the new name while historical consumption uses the former name.
Edit a Tag Group
From the Tag page, click View Tag Groups. From the Tag groups page, select Edit from the row action menu. If the tag group contains a tag that’s assigned to a resource, you can't edit the tag group. If all the tags that belong to the tag group aren’t assigned to resources, then you can edit the tag group name and description. Future consumption is tagged with the new name while historical consumption uses the former name.
Delete a Tag or Tag Group
To delete a tag or tag group, select Delete from the row action menu. Deleting a tag unassigns it from all tagged resources. Deleting a tag group deletes all of its tags and unassigns all associated resources.
You can still view historical consumption data for the deleted tag or tag group. If you delete a tag, there’s no way to recover it, for example, in a Recycle Bin. Instead, recreate it. After deletion, you’ll still see historical data for it. If you recreate a tag with the same name, you can see two versions of it: the old one with historical data, and the new one.
