General Search Layout Limitations

If a search layout isn’t available for an object, the object isn’t searchable and you can’t customize the search layout.
For the Salesforce mobile app, only the first six fields are shown in the layout.
The search results layouts for Accounts, Contacts, Leads, and Opportunities also apply to the search results displayed for duplicate leads.
For Personal, Contact Manager, Group, and Professional editions, search layouts override page layout settings. If a field is included in the search layout but hidden in the page layout, that field is visible in search results.
After you define an autonumber type name field for your record and remove the autonumber name field from the layout, you can’t click the record in the global search bar.

Search layouts don’t apply to Salesforce CRM Content, campaign members, opportunity teams, or account teams.
Search layouts don’t control which fields are searched for keyword matches. The list of fields searched is the same across Salesforce.
Custom buttons on search results pages aren’t supported in Lightning Experience.

In layouts for lookup phone dialogs, don’t remove the Phone field. If you do, users can’t use the directory search results to enter a phone number into a SoftPhone dial pad.
You can’t remove a unique identifying name field such as Account Name or Opportunity Name from the search layouts. You must include these fields in the layout. The exceptions are objects with an auto-number name, such as cases. For these objects, you can exclude the name field from the layout.
You can’t add long text fields such as Description or Solution Details to search layouts.
You can add all available fields to a search layout, even fields that are hidden from users.
Search layouts don’t override field-level security. If you include a field in the search layout that field-level security hides from users, users don’t see that field in their search results.
To visually differentiate business accounts from person accounts in account search results, add the Is Person Account field. This field shows the person account icon (), and you can make it the first column in the layout. Otherwise, Account Name is the first column.
For Email Message, adding the fields HTML Body or Related To to the search layout can cause errors in Lightning Experience. These fields are supported in Salesforce Classic only.
