Create a Nested Segment in Data 360

Create a Nested Segment in Data 360

Reuse filters and maintain consistency in your data by using an existing segment built on profile objects to build a new nested segment. A nested segment is a combination of an outer segment and inner segment. Each nested segment can have up to 50 filters in each tab.

          Required Editions

Available in: All Editions supported by Data 360. See Data 360 edition availability.
          Permission Sets Needed
          To create a nested segment:

          One of these permission sets:

          • Data Cloud Architect
          • Data Cloud Activation Manager
          • Data Cloud Activation Specialist
          1. In the segment canvas, click the Segments tab.
The list shows the segments that you can nest. You can’t nest dynamic segments and segments in error or inactive state, so they aren’t listed.
          2. Click the segment that you want to reuse. You can view the description next to the segment name.
You can’t use an outer nested segment as an inner segment, and the inner and outer segments must be in the same Segment On entity. If you edit the rules of an inner nested segment, the changes are applied to all the outer segments attached to it.
          3. Click Edit Rules.
          4. Drag your segment to the canvas.
You can open the segment in a different tab to review its content by clicking the arrow icon next to the segment’s name.
          5. On the Include or Exclude tab, select the publish behavior.
            1. Use Last Published Membership: Use the segment population from the most recent publish of the child segment.

              This option is recommended when:

              • The segment contains complex, computationally intensive logic.
              • You prefer improved performance over real-time freshness.
              • The child segment’s data is relatively stable and refreshed at predictable intervals.
              Note
Note Ensure the child segment is published at least once. Its population doesn't refresh with the parent segment's publish schedule.
            2. Use Segment Criteria: Copy the filter criteria of the child segment into the parent segment.

              This option is recommended when:

              • Real-time updates are critical, and changes in the child segment must immediately reflect in the parent segment.
              • The child segment’s filters are simple, as the parent segment’s total filter limit (50 filters per tab) includes both child and parent filters.
            Note
Note For rapid segments and segments that use grouping, ranking, and limiting rules, only the Last Published Membership option is available. The Segment Criteria option isn’t supported for these segment types.
          6. Click Done, and then click Save.
