Create a custody item to track physical or digital evidence in a case or case proceeding.

Create a Custody Item By Using Guided Flow
Use the guided flow in the Custody Items tab of the Casework Overview to add a custody item to a case. Additionally, you can add the chain of custody and any related regulatory code violations with the custody item.
- In the Public Sector: Investigative Case Management app, click the app navigation menu, and select Cases.
- Select a case.
- Click the Custody Items tab, and click Add.
- Specify custody item details, such as a descriptive name, category.
- To add attachments, such as photos regarding the evidence, upload the file.
- Click Next.
- To add custodian details for the custody item, click New custody chain entry.

Specify the custodian details, and save your changes.
You can add more custodians.
- Click Next.

Select the relevant regulatory code violations to add to the custody item.
Note Only the regulatory code violations that are linked to the case in question are available for selection. - Click Next and confirm the creation of the custody item.
- To view the newly created custody item, on the Custody Items tab, click Refresh.
Create a Custody Item Manually
Create a custody item and then create a custody item relation to connect the custody item to a case or a case proceeding.
Before you create a custody item relation, make sure that you have a case or a case proceeding. See Create a Case Proceeding
- From the App Launcher, find and select Custody Items.
- Click New.

Specify these details.

Enter a descriptive name.
For example, enter DNA sample.
- Enter a collection date.

Enter an external identifier.
For example, enter a code that aligns with an external record keeping system.
- Select a category. For example, select Physical.
- Select a status. For example, select New.
- If necessary, add a description.

Enter a descriptive name.

Save your work.
On the custody item record, you can add attachments, such as photos, or create an interaction summary to record correspondence regarding the evidence.

Create a custody item relation
- From the App Launcher, find and select Custody Item Relations.
- Click New.
- For Context, select Case or Case Proceeding, and then search for and select a case or case proceeding record.
- Search for and select a custody item.
- Select a status. For example, select Qualified.
- If necessary, add a description.
You can now add a related regulatory code violation to this custody item, and also specify the custodian details. See Create a Custody Item Regulatory Code Violation and Create a Custody Chain Entry.
