Definitions of common beacon terms used in MobilePush in Marketing Cloud Engagement.

Universally Unique Identifier (UUID) A unique string of letters and numbers that is used to identify a beacon. This string is found on the beacon hardware. Enter the UUID exactly as listed when you create a beacon location. Also known as a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID).
Major A value that groups a related set of beacons.
Minor A value that specifies a particular beacon within a major group.
Proximity Messaging Proximity messaging uses Bluetooth technology to notify nearby mobile devices of their proximity to a Beacon device and causes the device to display a push notification.
Magic fence A magic fence tells the app which nearby geofences and beacon GUIDs to download.
Geofence A virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area. A geofence uses the GPS capability on a user’s device to determine their position. MobilePush can deliver a message when the user enters or exits the geofence. Geofences can be used with beacons.
Known beacon A beacon that the app is tracking.
