          Previous Version of Contacts

          Previous Version of Contacts

Complete instructions for using the previous version of Contacts in MobilePush.

Contacts stores information on subscribers for use in your MobilePush activities. MobilePush gathers information about Contacts via opt-in confirmation and other information submitted via mobile applications. You can’t manually add Contacts or subscriptions to MobilePush.

You can use Contacts to manage the following standard information fields about your subscribers:

          • First Name
          • Last Name
          • City
          • State
          • ZIP Code
          • Time Zone
          • UTC Offset (the number of hours from which the user's time zone deviates from UTC)
          • Observe DST (whether the user's time zone observers Daylight Savings Time or not)
          • Platform
          • System Token
          • Device ID
          • Status
            • Indicates that Contact information can be used as part of a send
              • Active
              • Disabled

A Contact displays an Active status after opting in to receive notifications via MobilePush. That status changes to Disabled when you manually unsubscribe a Contact or when that Contact opts out from further push notifications. Once a Contact status changes to Disabled, the Contact must opt back in to receiving push notifications via the app.

You can also add attributes for your Contacts to include custom information you require to send messages.

Each category of information includes its own entries for preferred name, address, and other information about the subscriber. This information can be used within that category but doesn’t necessarily apply to the subscriber when using other categories. For example, a subscriber might want to have their mobile number associated with certain subscriptions and not others. The Contacts feature allows the subscriber to specify how and where they choose to receive certain information.

To assign multiple addresses to a single Contact (such as an email address, a mobile number, and a Twitter handle), you must have the subscriber key feature enabled for your account. Contact your account executive for more information on enabling subscriber key for your account.

You can also include tags on each app subscription for a specific Contact. Those tags derive from information submitted via the app, and you can use those tags to filter Contacts into lists that receive more targeted communications.

Use the Contacts field to perform the following actions:

          • Manage existing Contacts
          • Manage the Lists built on your Contacts
          • Display the number of opt-ins and percentage of growth over a given time span

You can also create an audience of Contacts via Audience Builder and conduct sends to those audiences. Refer to the Audience Builder documentation for more information on creating audiences to receive your sends.

Follow these instructions to create and manage Contacts within the MobilePush app.

          How to Import Contacts

To import a file, you must include values for the following attributes for each Contact:

          • Platform - The operating system used by the mobile device:
            • iPhone OS
            • Android
          • System Token - The platform-specific identifier (assigned by the platform owner, such as Apple or Google) requested by the device itself
          • Device ID - The ID string generated by the Journey Builder for Apps SDK and used to identify the mobile device

When you import Contacts from your previous push provider, ensure that you include the System Token value (assigned by the platform owner, such as Apple or Google) stored by that push provider in your import.

If you import new Contacts before MobilePush generates the new Device ID, include a unique identifier value for each device involved in the import until that value can be generated.

Depending on the attributes included in your account, your import may also require other attributes. You can review the required attributes for your account by following these steps:

          1. On the Overview screen, click Manage Contacts.
          2. In the Mobile window, click the Attributes tab.
          3. Make sure that your import file includes columns for all attributes with a Yes value in the Required column.

Import files must include values for all required attributes or the import will fail.

If your account uses a subscriber key, also known as a contact key, you must include and map that field as part of your import process.

When you import a mobile number for a Contact, ensure that you include all applicable country and region codes for that number (such as 1 and the area code for a US number or 44 and the area code for a UK number).

Follow these steps to import Contacts into your account:

          12. Click Next.
          13. Review the information for accuracy.
          14. Enter your email address in the Email Address field to receive notification when the import process completes. If you don’t enter an email address, you don’t receive notification.
