Email Authentication and Sending IP Reputation

Email Authentication and Sending IP Reputation

To determine if a message is spam, most spam filters check for appropriate email authentication and look at your sending IP reputation. To avoid having your emails considered spam, use email authentication and protect your sending reputation.

          Email Authentication

Email authentication helps ISPs determine whether an email is coming from a legitimate source. If you’re using Account Engagement to send emails, setting up email authentication is crucial for good deliverability. Account Engagement requires you to verify sending domain ownership. We also recommend setting up DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) authentication. Sender Policy Framework (SPF) authentication is configured for you by default. Almost all ISPs and most spam filter providers check for these common forms of authentication before they deliver an email.

          Sending IP Reputation

Your sending IP reputation is based on many factors, including:

          • Bounce rates
          • Blocklistings
          • Spam complaints
          • Lack of sending IP history

If your sending IP reputation gets damaged, it can hurt your deliverability. Lower-volume senders typically use shared sending IPs, so we take IP reputation seriously. If a client is blocklisted for spamming, it can affect deliverability for other clients on the shared IP.

Maintain a good IP reputation by following the Permission-Based Marketing policy, warming up your IP address, and making sure that your lists are 100% opted-in and engaged.
