An account can’t exist more than once in the same relationship group.
The account you select as the principal record retains its original relationship group memberships. For example, suppose that the principal record “Joseph Blake” is a member of the “Blake Family” and “Blake Law Firm” relationship groups. “Joseph Blake” remains a member of those relationship groups.
The principal record replaces the non-principal records in all other relationship groups involved in the merge. For example, suppose that the non-principal record “Joe Blake” is a member of “Blake Trust Beneficiaries.” The principal record is transferred to Joe Blake’s membership in Blake Trust Beneficiaries.
If multiple non-principal records belong to a relationship group that the principal record doesn’t belong to, the principal record acquires membership as follows:
For example, suppose that the non-principal records “JR Blake” and “Joe Blake” both are members of “Acme LLP” and JR Blake is primary. The principal record is transferred to JR Blake’s membership in Acme LLP. Alternatively, suppose that JR Blake and Joe Blake aren’t primary or secondary, but JR Blake’s member record in the relationship group was modified more recently. The principal record is transferred to JR Blake’s membership in Acme LLP.
