Set Up a Historical Commission Expense Report

Set Up a Historical Commission Expense Report

If your company has historical sales data from a system outside of Salesforce Spiff, you can include that data in a commission expense report.

          Required Editions

Available in: both Salesforce Classic (not available in all orgs) and Lightning Experience
Available in: Enterprise, Unlimited, and Developer Editions
Available for an additional cost in: Professional Edition with Web Services API Enabled
          User Permissions Needed
To set up a historical commission expense report:

A Spiff user role with these permissions turned on.

          • Data Sources: Edit
          • Expense Portfolios: Edit
          1. Upload the historical commission data into Spiff and include these required fields.
            • Deal ID
            • Amount
            • Capitalization start date
            • Amortization start date
            • Amortization end date
          2. Create a data filter for your imported data.
          3. Create a payout rule where the commission amount references the amount field on the datasheet.
Add the rule to a hidden plan or to a ghost rule for an admin. Give the rule and plan names that clearly identify historical data. See Hidden Plans in Salesforce Spiff, Create a Payout Rule, and Considerations for Ghost Rules.
          4. Create a historical expense portfolio.
            • For the value to capitalize, reference the payout rule you created. Leave the amount field blank for the obligation commission amount that Spiff calculated. You can add logic that changes the amount to expense.
            • Include the capitalization date, amortization start date, and amortization end date.

The effective dates in the portfolio don't have to match the capitalization and amortization dates. If the effective dates are January 1, 2025 through January 31, 2025 and the capitalization date is January 2023, the portfolio capitalizes on the specified date and amortization begins on the specified date.
