          Considerations for Location Usage Types

          Considerations for Location Usage Types

Define the inventory model at the location level to maintain consistent logic and prevent data corruption. Review these rules and validations before managing location usage types.

          Field Immutability

Usage Type (SerializedInvTrackingMethod) is a one-time configuration.

          • Associate Product Item or Serialized Product records to lock Usage Type. After you link records, the field is non-editable.
          • Update Usage Type by first removing or reallocating all associated Product Items to resolve validation errors.
          • Verify that location has no existing inventory links before setting tracking methods to avoid configuration errors.

          Product Transfer Restrictions

System validation rules block certain transactions to keep inventory pools separate.

          • Transfer products only between locations that share the same Usage Type.
          • Avoid transfers between mismatched types, such as moving stock from an Asset-based location to a Serialized Product-based location.

          Consumables (Non-Serialized Products)

Usage Type rollup logic excludes non-serialized products.

          • Maintain standard consumable behavior regardless of location settings so existing workflows remain undisrupted.
          • Calculate inventory counts for consumables without considering whether a location is Asset-based or Serialized Product-based.
          • Reduce admin maintenance for high-volume items like keyboards, mice, or cables that don't require strict inventory models.
