          Minimize Travel Service Objective

          Use the Field Service Minimize Travel objective to reduce the total amount of travel time added to the schedule to maximize productivity and profitability.

          Required Editions

          Available in: both Salesforce Classic (not available in all orgs) and Lightning Experience
          The Agentforce Field Service and Operations core features, managed package, and mobile app are available in Enterprise, Unlimited, and Developer Editions.

          Include this objective to control how much you trade off other scheduling preferences like scheduling as soon as possible, to minimize the overall time spent on travel.

          During schedule creation, the objective calculates the amount of travel time added to the schedule. Added travel means the objective considers the difference in total travel time between the old schedule and the new schedule. For example, if a new appointment needs to be scheduled, and three options for the appointment exist.

          • Option 1: Overall travel time added to the schedule is 4 minutes.
          • Option 2: Overall travel time added to the schedule is 30 minutes.
          • Option 3: Overall travel time added to the schedule is 132 minutes.

          Of the three options, option 1 is preferred because the difference in travel time between the old schedule and this option is the lowest of the available options (4 minutes).

          If you don’t want the objective to consider travel to and from home in travel calculations, you can select to exclude home base travel. Excluding home base travel can improve response speed and ensure the service resource with the shortest travel time to the site is dispatched, regardless of their home base location at the start or end of their shift. This capability is critical for high-urgency industries like Roadside Assistance and Ambulatory Services, where quick arrival to a site outweighs the additional travel time for a resource to return home. With home base travel, the engine calculates the total travel increase for the entire day—including the return trip home—which can penalize the closest resource if their home base is far from the site. By excluding home travel, the engine focuses solely on the travel between service appointments, ensuring the closest resource is dispatched.

          When You’re Using Enhanced Scheduling and Optimization

          When you’re using Enhanced Scheduling and Optimization, you can exclude travel to home, travel from home, or both from the Minimize Travel service objective’s calculations. Add the Exclude Travel To Home Base and Exclude Travel From Home Base options to your Minimize Travel service objective page layout. If you’re transitioning to use the enhanced engine, remove the Exclude Home Base Travel option from your Minimize Travel service objective page layout as this is no longer relevant.

          Each second of added travel time is penalized. For example, 120 minutes of travel is scored better than 150 minutes of travel. The penalty value is calculated as X minutes of added travel time divided by a 120-minute scale. (Travel time greater than 120 minutes is still graded on a 120-minute scale, so for example, 150 minutes of travel are penalized more than 130 minutes of travel.) The total penalty points are multiplied by the weight of the Minimize Travel objective in the scheduling policy to determine the resulting score of the schedule for that appointment.

          When you use Get Candidates, the assessed penalty is normalized on a 0 to 100 scale to display the objective score explanation.

          Note If a capacity-based resource is one of the resource options, zero travel time is assumed, meaning this resource receives the best grade possible for the Minimize Travel objective. Use the Resource Priority objective to set scheduling preferences for capacity-based resources if required.

          When You’re Not Using Enhanced Scheduling and Optimization

          When you’re not using Enhanced Scheduling and Optimization, you can exclude all travel to and from home from the Minimize Travel service objective’s calculations. Add the Exclude Home Base Travel option to your Minimize Travel service objective page layout.

          When you're not using Enhanced Scheduling and Optimization, each minute of added travel time is graded on a 0 to 120-minute scale. Each option is normalized on a scale of 0 to 100, where no travel (0 minutes) gets the best grade of 100, and 2 hours and above gets the worst grade of 0. For example, 150 minutes of travel is scored the same as 120 minutes of travel. The graded value of the schedule for that appointment is multiplied by the weight of the Minimize Travel objective in the scheduling policy to determine the resulting score of the schedule for that appointment.

          When you use scheduling operations that aren’t optimization, such as Book Appointment, Get Candidates, Schedule, Fill-In Schedule, and Group Nearby actions, the objective score is determined relative to the other scheduling options. The best option gets a score of 100, the worst option gets a score of 0, and the rest of the options get a normalized value between 0 to 100.

          If only one option is available, it’s scored with a value of 100.

          If only two options are available, the best gets a score of 100, and the worst gets a score of 0, regardless of the actual values of added travel time. For example, option 1 has added travel time of 13 minutes and option 2 has added travel time of 14 minutes, and while they’re very close in value, they’re graded as 100 and 0 respectively.
