Salesforce products (other than Data 360) use traditional keyword indexing. These
keywords are stored at rest in search index files. When you turn on Search Index encryption,
sensitive data, even when tokenized for search, remains unreadable to unauthorized parties if
the indexes are compromised.
Required Editions
Available in both Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic (not available in
all orgs).
Available in: Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited and
Developer Editions. Requires purchasing Salesforce Shield or Shield
Platform Encryption.
Note This page is about Shield Platform Encryption,
not Classic Encryption. What's the difference?
While search functionality remains largely unaffected for most encrypted fields, enabling
this feature adds another layer of defense, particularly for personally identifiable
information (PII) or other highly sensitive data that users might search for within the
Salesforce environment.
Note Data 360 search indexes are not encrypted using Search Index encryption. They
are encrypted along with all other Data 360 data stores using Platform Encryption for Data
360.
Database Encryption does not extend its encryption to search indexes. You must turn on Search
Index encryption to protect your search indexes.
