Mapping Lead Record Type to Account Record Type

Knowledge Article Number 000004455
Description When a Lead is converted to an Account, the Lead Record Type does not map over to the Account Record Type. The account record created through Lead Conversion will not be based on the record type of the user who converted the lead, instead it uses the default record type assigned to the profile of the specified record owner during Lead conversion.

Below are some known workarounds.

Resolution
Option 1:

1. Create a Lead Custom Formula Field with a return type of Text:
   a) Name the field (for example Lead Record type (Conversion))
   b) You also have the choice to leave it on the page or make it a hidden field

2. Create an Account custom Text field:
   a) Name the field (for example Account Record type (Conversion))
   b) You also have the choice to leave it on the page or make it a hidden field

3. Setup Lead field mapping:
     a) Go to Setup | Customize | Leads | Fields | Map Lead Fields button
     b) Map the new Lead Custom Formula (Text) Field to the new Account Text field

5. Create a Workflow Rule on Accounts:
   a) To do this go to Setup> Create> Workflow & Approvals> Workflows
   b) Click New
   c) Name the workflow and then then select the Evaluation criteria to be Created
   d) Add the Rule Criteria as:
Account Record type (Converted) Equals <Record type Name>
   e) Add a field update to your workflow that will update the standard account record type field to the appropriate value.

Option 2:

1. Create a Lead Custom Field with a return type of Text:
   a) Field Name = Lead Record Type (Hidden)
   * This field should not be on any lead page layout to prevent editing

2. Create an Account custom Text field:
   a) Field Name = AccountRecord Type (Hidden)
   * You will need to specify the length accordingly
   * Also, this field should not be on any page layout to prevent editing

3. Setup Lead field mapping:
   a) Go to Setup | Customize | Leads | Fields | Map Lead Fields button
   b) Map the new Lead Custom Text Field to the new Account Text field

4. Create a Workflow Rule on Leads with the Rule Criteria: Record Type (Hidden) equals Blank.

5. Add a Field Update to Update the Lead Record Type (Hidden) Field with the Name of the Lead Record Type.

6. Create a Workflow Rule on Accounts with the Rule Criteria: Record Type (Hidden) equals <Record Type Name>. The Evaluation Criteria should be set to trigger when a record is created.

7. Add a field update to your workflow that will update the standard account record type field to the appropriate value.

Note: You will have to create a separate workflow for each Standard Account Record type value you have, in the same method this can be used to update the Opportunity and Contact record types.
