What’s changing?
Extended support for Lightning Experience with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 11 (IE11), including Lightning console apps such as Lightning Sales Console and Lightning Service Console, end on January 1, 2023.
After December 31, 2022, the use of Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) with Lightning Experience and Salesforce classic is no longer supported. And, issues and breaking changes with performance or functionality that affect only IE11 are no longer fixed.
Salesforce and its affiliates have no liability, whether in contract or tort and regardless of the theory of liability, in connection with damages arising from your continued use of Lightning Experience with IE11 before or after December 31, 2022.
Can you continue to use IE11 after December 31, 2022?
A permanent banner appears in Salesforce, indicating that the IE11 browser is unsupported. If you use IE11, you can be blocked from accessing Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic, and features aren’t guaranteed to work correctly. New features are supported and available only on current browsers.
What security risks are there with using IE11?
IE11 doesn’t support Content Security Policy (CSP), a standard security technology that’s supported by current browsers. CSP is an added layer of security that helps to detect and mitigate certain types of attacks, including Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and data injection attacks. Lightning Experience uses CSP to securely enable components from different authors to live side by side on a page.
What kind of performance risks are there with using IE11?
In a prior study, the performance difference between IE11 and current browsers slowed by up to 50x. In IE11, rendering Lightning Experience pages can exceed 5 seconds compared to rendering in Chrome. Salesforce recommends using a supported browser.
Is there any extended support for IE11 available after January 1, 2023?
No. Discontinuing support creates opportunities for the Lightning Platform to focus on advancing products that use state-of-the-art web technologies.
Is Salesforce Experience Cloud affected by this change?
Salesforce Experience Cloud can function differently. Breaking changes and issues can occur because new features are no longer tested on IE11.
Are products such as Salesforce for Outlook or Outlook Integration, which rely on IE11 for some functionality, affected by this change?
Yes. With Salesforce for Outlook, if you have access only to Lightning Experience, take one of the suggested workarounds to continue using it. Some Outlook Integration users on certain desktop versions of Microsoft Outlook also must take a suggested workaround. To learn more, see:
Is support for IE11 with the Salesforce Mobile web app affected by this change?
Support for IE11 with the Salesforce Mobile web app ended on December 16, 2017.
What alternative ways are there to access and continue to use Lightning because of other websites that use IE11?
Salesforce recommends that users migrate from IE11 and use a supported browser.
The current versions of the Microsoft Edge browser are supported and offer an Internet Explorer mode. You can still access non-Salesforce websites that require IE11 by using the Internet Explorer mode feature in Microsoft Edge.
See the how-to guide to enable IE mode in Microsoft Edge to navigate to modern and legacy sites using the same web browser.
How can Salesforce admins identify affected users?
You can run a report on your users and add the browser field to the report, filtering which users use IE11. And you can view the login history from Setup to determine which browsers your users employ to log in to Salesforce.
