Quip New Custom Live App Retirement

We’d like to announce that Quip will no longer allow customers to create new Live Apps after March 5th, 2025.


How does this affect my Quip documents and what actions do I need to take?
This change will only impact the ability to create new Live Apps after March 5th, 2025; existing Live Apps will still be accessible and available to use. Existing Live Apps will continue to display in Quip documents and Live App data from external sources will refresh as expected.

No action is needed at this time. The adjustment only blocks the ability to create a new Live App for Quip, it does not remove existing Live Apps. For more information on Quip Live App development, see https://quip.com/dev/liveapps/1.x.x/guide/.

Why is Quip retiring new Live Apps?

We are constantly evaluating all areas of the product to ensure we’re focusing resources on the capabilities that deliver the most value to customers. While some customers have created impactful live apps in the past, recent live app creation has declined significantly and only includes a small percentage of customers. We understand that this may have a negative impact on the users who would like to create new live apps in the future, but we made this tough decision to ensure that the overall Quip product continues to be reliable, stable, and performant for all of our customers.

If I try to create a Quip Live App after 03/05/2025, what will my experience be?
The "Create a Live App" button will no longer show up in the Developer console after 03/05/2025, and users who try to create a new live app through the Quip CLI will see an error message that says "Quip no longer allows users to create new live apps as of March 5th, 2025".
