Computer Setup Guide for Tableau Expert-Led Courses

Many of our expert-led courses require a few things to be installed on your computer or configured in order to be able to fully participate in the course. Find your upcoming course below, and follow the steps provided. If at any point you’re struggling with computer setup, contact your IT department for support or log a case for assistance. 

Please complete these steps prior to attending the course as your instructor will be unable to start training until all participants have finished their computer setup.

Setup Guide for Jumpstart Your Charts: Build the Most Common Tableau Views (TTD001)

The course activities are completed in the Tableau Desktop application.

Step 1: Install or confirm your access to Tableau Desktop on your computer.

    1. If needed, install Tableau Desktop from the Tableau Releases page.
    2. FAQ:
      1. What version of Tableau Desktop should I install? Course exercises are designed for the version listed in your course materials (typically the most recent Tableau release). To verify your installed version, open Tableau Desktop, and from the Help menu, select About Tableau. A dialog opens that tells you which version you are using. For help, see Tableau Version Compatibility.
      2. What if I’m not running the specified version? No problem. While you may notice some differences in appearance or functionality, you can use the version you have, or, install the specified version from the Tableau Releases page.

Step 2: Confirm your license will be active for the duration of the course:

    1. To view your license expiration date, open Tableau Desktop, and from the Help menu, select Manage Product Keys.
    2. If needed, download a free trial version; note that it typically lasts for 14 days.
    3. Important: If your full or trial license will not be active for the course duration, please log a case for further assistance.

Step 3: For virtual* expert-led courses, you’ll need the following equipment:

  1. The ability to use Zoom - For system requirements and Zoom guide, check out Zoom support.
  2. A headset - A headset is highly recommended but if you don’t have one, be sure to have good computer speakers and a microphone.
  3. Two screens - For the best experience, you need either two monitors or two computers:
    1. The first for the Zoom session, watching the instructor and interacting with classmates
    2. The second for viewing the exercise directions and using the tool(s) to complete the exercises yourself
  4. Additional Recommendations: Please review these additional recommendations for successful training.

Setup Guide for Tableau Desktop Courses (TTD101, TTD201, TTD301, TVA101)

The following courses are Tableau Desktop Courses:

  • Tableau Desktop I: Fundamentals (TTD101)
  • Tableau Desktop II: Intermediate (TTD201)
  • Tableau Desktop III: Advanced (TTD301)
  • Tableau Visual Analytics (TVA101)


Step 1: Select and Setup your Tableau Environment for the Course

The course activities can be completed in the Tableau Desktop application or in the browser, from your Tableau site on Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud. Select your environment from the options below. Most students will use Option A: Tableau Desktop.

Option A: Use Tableau Desktop installed on your Computer (Most Common)

  1. Install or confirm your access to Tableau Desktop on your computer:
    1. If needed, install Tableau Desktop from the Tableau Releases page.
    2. FAQ:
      1. What version of Tableau Desktop should I install? Course exercises are designed for the version listed in your course materials (typically the most recent Tableau release). To verify your installed version, open Tableau Desktop, and from the Help menu, select About Tableau. A dialog opens that tells you which version you are using. For help, see Tableau Version Compatibility.

Option B: Use a Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server Site in the Browser

  1. Confirm you have access to a Tableau site.
    1. Visit online.tableau.com to sign in. Use the credentials provided by your company.
    2. NOTE: Gaining approval to use a company-owned site for training purposes is recommended. Alternatively, use a trial version.
  2. Confirm you are assigned a Creator license type.
    1. To verify your site role, log into your Tableau site and from the User menu at the top right of the screen, select My Account Settings. Your site role is listed under your name at the top of the page.
    2. Important: Users with Explorer or Viewer site roles can not complete exercises. If you are not assigned a Creator role, please use a trial version.
  3. Select a project folder you’ll use in the course and confirm you have permission to publish.
    1. If you are on a company-owned site, we recommend that you request or create a Sandbox/Test project that you can use for storing files and completing activities.
    2. Alternatively, you can store files and complete activities in your Personal Space.

Step 2: Download and Unzip Student Exercise Files

The Exercises folder contains datasets, starter workbooks and solution workbooks. It will be provided to you as a .ZIP folder to download, which may take time or be restricted by your company’s access policies. We recommend that you complete the following before the course begins:

  1. Follow the Trailhead Academy Course Materials instructions to access your eBook and course materials.
  2. From your Mimeo account, click on the course materials folder (a .zip file) to download it to your computer.
  3. Unzip or Extract the files to successfully use its contents during the course.
    1. Tip: Set up a Quick Link or Bookmark to the file folder for easy access during the course.
    2. Have additional questions? See answers to common questions under the “Tableau Training Materials” section of the Trailhead Academy Course Materials page.

The following course is the Tableau Prep Course:

  • Tableau Prep I (TTP101)

Step 1: Setup your Tableau Environment for the Course

  1. Install or confirm your access to both Tableau Prep Builder and Tableau Desktop:
    1. If needed, install Tableau Prep Builder from the Tableau Prep Releases page and Tableau Desktop from the Tableau Desktop Releases page.
    2. FAQ:
      1. What version of Tableau Prep Builder and Tableau Desktop should I install? Course exercises are designed for the version listed in your course materials (typically the most recent Tableau release). To verify your installed version, open Tableau Prep Builder and from the Help menu, select About Tableau. A dialog opens that tells you which version you are using. Repeat the process for Tableau Desktop. For help, see Tableau Version Compatibility.
      2. What if I’m not running the specified version? No problem. While you may notice some differences in appearance or functionality, you can use the version you have, or, install the specified version from the Tableau Prep Releases page or Tableau Desktop Releases page.
      3. If I typically use Tableau Prep in the browser, do I need to install the Tableau Prep Builder desktop application on my computer? Yes, you’ll need to install Tableau Prep Builder so that you can open and publish Tableau Packaged Flow (.tflx) files, which are used for course exercises. However, many of the course topics and exercises can be explored from flows and workbooks on a Tableau site. Features that are not supported in the browser are noted in the course materials.
  2. Confirm your license will be active for the duration of the course:
    1. To view your license expiration date, open Tableau Prep Builder, and from the Help menu, select Manage Product Keys.
    2. If needed, download a free trial version; note that it typically lasts for 14 days.
    3. Important: If your full or trial license will not be active for the course duration, please log a case for further assistance.

The following courses are Tableau Server Courses:

  • Tableau Site Administration (TSA101)
  • Tableau Server Administration (TSA201)

Note: All Tableau Server courses are hosted on virtual machines (VMs). You will receive a link to access the virtual machine from your instructor during the course.

Setup Guide for Collaborate with a Tableau Site (TAB004)

Step 1: Select a Default Browser

  1. Start by downloading one of the following browsers:
    1. Chrome or Firefox (review the Considerations for Mozilla Firefox Salesforce Help article).
  2. Confirm all possible outstanding browser updates are made and that a desktop shortcut is created.

Step 2: Your computer is set up and ready for class!

Setup Guide for Discover Data Insights with Tableau (TAB101)

Step 1: Ensure you're using a supported internet browser
You'll complete course activities on a Tableau Cloud site, which you may access for the duration of training. You will receive login credentials at the beginning of the course.

    1. Confirm you have internet access on a supported browser:

      • Chrome on Windows and Mac
      • Mozilla Firefox and Firefox ESR on Windows and Mac
      • Microsoft Edge on Windows
      • Apple Safari on Mac

Step 2: For virtual* expert-led courses, you’ll need the following equipment:

  1. The ability to use Zoom - For system requirements and Zoom guide, check out Zoom support.
  2. A headset - A headset is highly recommended but if you don’t have one, be sure to have good computer speakers and a microphone.
