          Lookup Searches

With lookup fields, you associate two records to create a relationship. For example, a contact record includes an account lookup field that associates the contact with its account.

          Required Editions

          Available in: Lightning Experience
Available in: all editions except Database.com

If you create a lookup field for contact on an account details page, the lookup search references that field when searching for a contact. The lookup search filters your search results and scopes it to the right object.

          Lookup Suggestions (Instant Results)

For objects available in Search Manager, as you start typing in a lookup field, the results adjust dynamically with records that match the name field. The results include recent items, items from your most frequently used objects, and items from the current object. A secondary field under the record name displays contextual information, such as the contact’s phone number. Search uses only the record name field when looking for matches, unless the name is an auto-number. For auto-number names, search uses the secondary field to match results under certain circumstances.

          Advanced Lookup

When you type two or more characters, click Show more results to open the Advanced Search window. Advanced lookup searches through all searchable fields within a record, not just the name field. Searching through more fields helps include all relevant records in the results. Results are sorted by relevance.

          Considerations for Lookup Search

          • As you start typing in a lookup field, the results adjust dynamically with records that have matches in the name field. The results include recent items, items from your most frequently used objects, and items from the current object. A secondary field under the record name displays contextual information, such as the contact’s phone number. Search uses only the record name field when looking for matches.
          • When you select the option to perform a full lookup search, the search looks through all searchable fields within a record, not just the Name field. Use the arrow keys to select an option. Searching through more fields eliminates guesswork and helps prevent missing records in the results. You can sort full search results by clicking column headings or sort by relevance using the Sorted by dropdown list.
          • Extra search features, like nicknames, spelling correction, and lemmatization, are applied depending on the object and language, making results more relevant.
          • For lookups, records are added to the recent items list when you create or edit a record. If you don’t see a record when you select a lookup field, exit from the current session and start a new session to create or edit a record. The list is updated to include the new record.
          • If a custom object has search disabled, you can still perform a lookup search for the record. The lookup search matches only against the record name.
          • Lookup fields can act as a secondary field. When entering an account name in global search, search provides contacts related to that account.
