          About Metrics

A metric is a business KPI that you can track over time and use to assess performance or business processes. A metric is derived from one or more measures. You can apply a sentiment to a metric (for example, up is good or bad), aggregation (for example, sum, non-cumulative, average, minimum, maximum), and other business contexts.

In some cases, a metric has a behavior that is applied across all queries. For example, GDP is a metric that can only be calculated on a country level, and it should be calculated this way in different views of data.

Sub-metrics are detailed performance indicators that provide additional granularity to a main metric. They allow you to break down primary metrics into more specific, actionable data points, offering deeper insights and more precise analysis.

You can store metrics and reuse them across different experiences, while using semantic queries to visualize metrics over time.

Metrics can also be created directly in the Semantic Layer tab in Data 360. For more information, see Create a Metric for a Semantic Model.

          • Add a Metric to a Semantic Model
Within Tableau Next, create a metric based on a semantic model.
          • Use Metric Templates from Marketplace
Creating effective metric insights is essential for monitoring performance and driving business decisions. You have two primary options for building these insights, developing custom key performance indicators (KPIs) from scratch or by using a pre-configured metrics template. Tableau Next metric templates offer a significant advantage by decreasing the time required to construct your KPIs.
