Manage Access to Semantic Models in Tableau Semantics

Manage Access to Semantic Models in Tableau Semantics

Control who can view or edit your semantic models by sharing them with specific users or your entire org. Semantic models are private by default, but you can manage access through the Share option and assign access roles, such as Viewer or Editor.

There are three access roles available for semantic models:

          • Viewer: Users can open the model and interact with it but can't make any changes.
          • Editor: Users have permission to modify the model.
          • Owner: The user who originally created the semantic model has full control. Owners can edit the model and manage access by sharing it with other users. While you can assign the Viewer or Editor access role to others, ownership can't be transferred.

You can share a semantic model with any user in the org, but it is visible only to users who have access to the dataspace where the model resides. These users must also have the appropriate permissions to view semantic models, including the object-level semantic model permission.

Sharing a model doesn’t override a user’s existing permissions. For example, if a user doesn’t have permission to edit semantic models, they won’t be able to edit the shared model even if you assign them the Editor role. Similarly, if a user has global edit permissions but you assign them the Viewer role for your model, they can only view it.

If users don’t have access to the underlying data, they can open the model to view or extend, but not edit.

The only exception applies to users with Modify All or View All permissions, typically admins. These users can open the model and access its full metadata, including restricted objects. They may also share the semantic model if they have the Modify All Records permission, even if they aren’t the owner. However, they can still encounter query failures when attempting to preview or test the model with fields or entities they don’t have access to.
