          Attach Files to Records

          Attach Files to Records

Attach files to records for a powerful way to collaborate and stay organized in Salesforce. Keep information on an opportunity, account, or case right where you need it. Share relevant documents with anyone with access to the record.

          Required Editions

Available in: Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience
Available in: Group, Essentials, Professional, Enterprise, , Performance, Unlimited, Developer, and Contact Manager Editions
          User Permissions Needed
          To attach files to records:

          Read

          OR

          Edit on the object

You can attach files—such as Microsoft® Office documents, Adobe® PDFs, images, and videos—to most Salesforce records through the Files related list.

If you don’t see the Files related list on a record, ask your admin to add it to the page layout for that record type. A file’s visibility on a record is controlled by the File Privacy on Records setting. When you know that a file is attached to a record, but you don’t see it, ask the file owner to adjust this setting.

          In Lightning Experience

Click Add Files in the Files related list menu, or drag files directly onto the Files related list. (You can drag multiple files, but not a folder. You can’t drag files onto read-only related lists.)

          Note
Note In Lightning Experience, your org may use a custom page layout for the file detail page. This page displays when you view or edit file details from the actions arrow on Files home, or when you edit file details from a file preview. However, if you click Edit File Details from the files related list on a record, the default file detail page displays instead of the custom layout. To see the custom file detail page layout on a file attached to a record, click the file’s title to open the file preview, and then click Edit File Details.

          In Salesforce Classic

Click Upload File in the Files related list.

          • Files uploaded to the Files related list always become Salesforce Files, whether you’re in Lightning Experience or Salesforce Classic.
          • In Salesforce Classic, files uploaded to Notes & Attachments are either Salesforce Files or attachments, depending on how your org’s preferences are set.
          • Turn on the preference to upload files as Salesforce Files in Setup. Type Salesforce Files in the Quick Find box, select General Settings, and then click Files uploaded to the Attachments related list on records are uploaded as Salesforce Files, not as attachments.
          • When the preference is enabled, the Notes & Attachments related list shows the Upload Files button. If not enabled, it shows the Attach File button.
          • The preference Files uploaded to the Attachments related list on records are uploaded as Salesforce Files, not as attachments doesn't apply to the Attachments related list in the Task and Event object.

          Limits

          • In Salesforce Classic, the size limit for a file attached directly to the related list is 25 MB. This limit includes a file attached to a solution.
          • In Lightning Experience, the size limit for a file attached directly to the related list is 10 GB.
          • The file size limit for Chatter feed attachments is 2 GB.
          • The size limit for an email message, including attachments, is 25 MB.
          • If the Don't allow HTML uploads as attachments or document records security setting is enabled for your organization, you can’t upload files with the following file extensions: .htm, .html, .htt, .htx, .mhtm, .mhtml, .shtm, .shtml, .acgi, .svg.
          • Uploads from the Files related list aren’t supported in the Salesforce mobile app.
          • Salesforce doesn't remove geolocation information from uploaded images.
