          Chatter Messages

In Salesforce Classic, send a question to another person privately, or communicate with a limited set of people. Messaging is useful when a discussion isn't relevant to everyone you work with. Messages also notify people when a file is shared with them.

          Required Editions

          Available in: Salesforce Classic
Available in: Group, Enterprise, Professional, Performance, Unlimited, Contact Manager, and Developer Editions

Messages don't appear in your feed, your profile, global search results, or any part of Chatter that's publicly visible.

Open the My Messages page by clicking the Messages link on the Chatter tab. On the My Messages page, you can:

          • See the most recent message in each of your conversations. The most recent message appears at the top of the list.
          • See the photo of the person who sent the most recent message.
          • See if you have unread messages (Unread message icon).
          • See if you sent the most recent reply (I replied last icon).
          • To view the full history of messages that were exchanged in a conversation, click any message.
          • Send a message by clicking New Message.

Your messages are organized into conversations. It’s the unique combination of the people who participate in a conversation that defines it. For example, let's say you send a message to S. Smith. When S. Smith replies, the reply continues your one-on-one conversation. Every new message you send to S. Smith—even if it's about a different topic—also continues the same conversation. Over time, you build a rich conversation history with S. Smith that contains every message you've ever exchanged. At the same time, let's say you send a message to both S. Smith and B. Johnson. That message is considered part of a separate conversation between you, S. Smith, and B. Johnson. When S. Smith replies, the reply continues in the conversation among you, S. Smith, and B. Johnson, rather than in your one-on-one conversation with S.

Consider these usage tips for Chatter messages.

          • You can send messages to anyone in your Chatter organization. It doesn't matter who you follow, who's following you, what groups you belong to, or if the recipient is a customer.
          • Conversations can involve up to 10 people total, including yourself. You can't send a message to yourself.
          • Conversation participants are established when someone sends the first message in the conversation. No one can add people or remove people from the conversation after the first message is sent.
          • As others reply, the Messages link on the Chatter tab shows the number of conversations with new messages. If you're already receiving Chatter email notifications, you're automatically notified of new messages.
          • You can't delete messages or conversations.
          • Imagine that, after reading the messages in a conversation, you want to mark the conversation unread. You can do so only with Connect REST API, and not with the user interface.
