          Chatter Overview

Use Chatter features such as feeds, profiles, and groups to share information, collaborate, and keep up with the latest updates in your company. Chatter works in accordance with all security and permission settings in your Salesforce organization.

          Required Editions

Available in: Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience
Available in: Group, Essentials, Professional, Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, Developer, and Contact Manager Editions
          Note
Note Beginning in Summer ’26, Chatter is turned off by default in all new orgs. For any features in these orgs that require access to Chatter functionality or the Chatter APIs, turn on Chatter by going to Setup | Chatter Settings and selecting Enable. For details, see Chatter Is Turned Off by Default in New Orgs Beginning in Summer ’26.

In Lightning Experience, if you don’t see the Chatter tab, open Chatter from the App Launcher. Most objects in Lightning Experience don't show a Chatter tab unless Feed Tracking is enabled for the object. The exceptions are Group, Site, and User objects.

Chatter is available on a per-organization basis. Only users within the same Salesforce organization can communicate with each other through Chatter. You can add people outside your company's email domains to use Chatter in your organization. When you add external users to a group that you own or manage, they appear as customer users.

          Note
Note We use “company” and “organization”—or “org”—interchangeably. An organization is a single deployment of Salesforce with a defined set of licensed users. The words “company” and “organization” are used interchangeably in Chatter. For example, let’s say you see “share a file with all Chatter users in your company.” It means you're sharing with everyone who uses Chatter in the org.

Chatter is available to customer users and partner users in Experience Cloud sites. But it’s not available to portal users in partner portals or Customer Portals.

Some third-party browser plug-ins and extensions can interfere with the functionality of Chatter. If you experience malfunctions or inconsistent behavior with Chatter, disable the browser's plug-ins and extensions and try again.

          Chatter isn’t supported:

Posts and comments that users make in Chatter are retained during the entire time that a customer's applicable org remains provisioned. We reserve the right to enforce limits on:

          • The number of system-generated tracked feed updates. Currently tracked feed updates that are older than 45 days and have no likes or comments are deleted automatically. The tracked feed updates no longer appear in the feed. However, if auditing is enabled for a tracked field, the audit history for that field is still available.
          • The number of email notifications that can be sent per org per hour.

The limits are subject to change. Contact Salesforce for more information.
