To assign attributes to a product classification: Manage Product Catalog

Here’s an example. Consider a product classification called “Beds Classification”. There’s an attribute category called “Bed” that has attributes such as material, finish, size, and model name. There’s another attribute category called “General” that has attributes such as Warranty in Months, and Country of Origin. The attributes Availability and Net Quantity don’t belong to any attribute category.

Individual and categorized attributes assigned to a product classification

You can assign attributes that belong to the attribute categories “Bed” and “General” to the product classification “Beds Classification”. You can also assign individual attributes “Net Quantity” and “Availability” to the product classification. The product classification “Beds Classification” now has all of these attributes.

To assign attributes, follow these instructions:

          1. From the Product Catalog Management app’s home page, click Product Classifications.
          2. On the Product Classifications list view page, click the product classification to which you want to assign attributes.
          3. Navigate to the Attributes tab.
          4. In the Attributes section, click Assign.
          5. To assign a collection of attributes to the product classification, select Assign Attributes by category. To assign individual attributes to the product classification, select Assign individual attributes.
          6. Click Next.
          7. If you selected Assign Attributes by category, then select one or more attribute categories, and click Assign.
            Note
Note You can assign only the active attributes of an attribute category to product classifications.
          8. If you selected Assign individual attributes, then select one or more attributes from the Categorized and Uncategorized tabs and click Assign.
            Note
Note You can assign only active attributes to product classifications.

You can unassign attributes from a product classification. If you unassign an attribute from a product classification, the status of the attribute changes to “Inactive”.

To delete an attribute assigned to a product classification, click The action icon next to an attribute next to the attribute, and click Delete.

To activate an inactive product classification attribute, click Edit, and change the status to Active.

You can preview a product classification to see how it will look and function for your users, if you have the Product Configuration User permission set license.

Considerations While Assigning Attributes to Product Classifications

Here are a few scenarios you can run into when assigning attributes to product classifications.

          Error Scenario Remediation
We couldn’t assign the selected Attribute Categories to the Product Classification. Select a single category for attributes that are duplicated across categories. No attributes have been assigned to the product classification so far. You’re now assigning attributes through attribute categories. The selected attribute categories have a few attributes in common. Select one category that’s the preferred category for the common attributes and assign that category to the product classification. If the preferred category is different for multiple common attributes, resolve conflicts by first assigning individual common attributes to the product classification, and then by assigning the remaining attributes via an attribute category.
Some attributes from the attribute category were already assigned to this product classification. The unassigned attributes are now assigned to the product classification. A few attributes (via some attribute categories) have already been assigned to the product classification. You’re now assigning more attributes through attribute categories. The selected attribute categories include attributes that have already been assigned to the product classification through other attribute categories.  The attributes from the attribute category that weren’t already assigned to the product classification are now assigned to the product classification.
We couldn’t assign the selected attributes because they belong to more than one category. Select a single attribute to an attribute category combination. A few attributes have already been assigned to the product classification. You’re assigning individual attributes to the product classification, but the selected attributes belong to more than one category.  Select a single attribute to an attribute category combination and assign it to the product classification.
