          Create Dynamic Content

          Create Dynamic Content

Use dynamic content in email messages. Dynamic content appears according to the rules that you define, based on the subscriber's attributes, data extension values, or audiences. If a subscriber matches more than one rule, they receive the content for the first rule that applies.

Before creating dynamic content, upload the content you want to use. If you make local copies of content blocks, update the dynamic content block in your emails and save the latest content when editing.

          1. Make a selection for Dynamic Block Options.
            • Keep content blocks up-to-date: Select this option if you want to apply future source block edits to emails using the block. This option is the default for new blocks and maintains references to the default and rule-based content so that edits are updated in the email that uses the dynamic content. Blocks and code snippets are valid references. Source files aren't.
              • The preview shows the AMPscript function of the content, like the reference block, to make sure that outdated content isn't shown.
              • To edit a dynamic content block used in an email, edit the source content (block or code snippet) referenced by the dynamic content block's default or rule-based content. Changes made directly to the dynamic content block aren't applied to emails that already use it. Alternatively, you can use a reference block to retrieve the dynamic content block.
              • Deleted dynamic content references render blank in the email if using Keep content blocks up-to-date but continue to render if using Make local copies of content blocks. If you delete references used in a dynamic content block, you can't switch Dynamic Block Options.
            • Make local copies of content blocks: Select this option if you don't want to apply source block edits to emails using the block. This option is the default for existing blocks.
          2. To select the content that appears if the subscriber data doesn't satisfy any of the dynamic content rules, click Browse.... If you don't select content, the block displays no content to the recipient.
          3. Add your content.
            Options Steps to Follow

          4. Click Select.
          5. Click Create Rule #.
          6. Select Profile Attribute or Data Extension as the source to create the dynamic content from. You select a source only the first time that you create a rule.
          7. Click Ok. If you selected Data Extension in the previous step, select the source data extension and click OK.

If you click Change before saving, the rules and content are removed.

          8. Drag attributes from the left column to the expression canvas. Use this table as a reference when building your filter.
            Function Description
is equal to Subscribers with an attribute definition that exactly matches the value. (Choose one value only.)
is not equal to Subscribers with an attribute definition that doesn't match the value. (Choose one value only.)
is greater than greater than equal to Use this operator when the attribute is a numeric value. Subscribers with an attribute definition greater than (or greater than or equal to) the value.
is less than less than equal to Use this operator when the attribute is a numeric value. Subscribers with an attribute definition less than (or less than or equal to) the value.
begins with The application looks for attribute values that begin with the exact sequence of characters that you enter as the comparison value. Commas are treated as characters and not as delimiters.
contains does not contain The application looks for attribute values that include or exclude the exact sequence of characters that you enter as the comparison value. Commas are treated as characters and not as delimiters.
ends with The application looks for attribute values that end with the exact sequence of characters that you enter as the comparison value. Commas are treated as characters and not as delimiters.
exists in The exists in operator looks for a partial match of the value.
exists in whole word The exists in whole word operator looks for a full match of the entire value. For example, if your match criteria is 2326,5308, this operator returns only subscribers with 2326 or 5308 attribute values.
does not exist in Subscribers with an attribute definition that doesn't match any of the values you define in a comma-delimited string of values. This operator doesn't apply when selecting an attribute with restricted values, as you can select only one of the restricted values as the comparison value.
is empty is not empty To filter for a blank value, select is empty or isn't empty.
is The application looks for either a true or false value. Your only options are True and False.
            Note
Note Be sure to select an operator that makes sense with the type of attribute you selected. For example, don't use the less than operator with a text attribute. For attributes with type equal to date, only these operators are supported: is equal to, is not equal to, is greater than, and is less than.
          9. Select an AND or OR operator. To group your criteria, hover over the grouping operator so that it turns a darker blue, and click to change the operator.
If you select AND, the subscriber must meet all criteria to be included in the group. If you select OR, the subscriber must meet one of the criteria, not necessarily all criteria, to be included in the group.
          10. To show all existing content, click Content.
          11. Drag the name of existing content that appears if the subscriber information satisfies this rule under Select Content. To upload new content, click Add.
          12. Click Save.
          13. Click Create Rule # and follow the rule creation steps until you create all the rules needed.
          14. To preview each content variation, click the rule area row. You can expand rules to view details and collapse rules to view many rules.
