Create and Send a Standard Push Notification

Create and Send a Standard Push Notification

Use the Standard template to create a push notification with one media attachment, that includes an image, video, or audio file, to make it more engaging. Add customizable buttons for Android devices. Specify custom sound for Android and iOS.

          1. In Content Builder, click Create, hover Mobile App, and select Push Notification.
          2. Select Standard layout, and then click Next.
          3. In the Content panel, enter a title and subtitle for your message.
          4. Enter the body of the message.
          5. Optionally, add media to your message.
            • Insert a URL or AMPscript, or select media from the Content Builder library.
              Tip
Tip If you use AMPscript in this field, use Subscriber Preview to verify that it renders correctly.
            • Enter alternate text.
            • Select whether to use different media for Android.
          6. Select an Open Behavior:
            • Open the App – Opens the app when the recipient taps the message.
            • Go to App URL – Opens a specific page in your app when the recipient taps the message.
            • Go to Web URL – Opens the default web browser and loads a specific URL when the recipient taps the message.
            • Go to CloudPage – Opens a CloudPage (such as a landing page or microsite) when the recipient taps the message.
            Note
            Note

If you don’t provide a call to action (CTA), the SDK open the app by default. If the CTA type is other than Open the App and the URL isn't specified or is invalid, SDK defaults to Open the App.

          7. To set up a message sound on iOS devices, select an option from the dropdown menu in the iOS Configurations section.
            • Device Default: Uses the default notification sound set by the device.
            • Custom: Allows you to use a custom sound file. The default is custom.caf. For a different file, consult your app developer.
            • None: Makes the notification silent.
          8. To set up your message for the Android devices, select an option from the dropdown menus in the Android Configurations section. Make sure your users are on SDK version 9.0 and later to see the icons.
            • Small Icon - Appears in the top status bar and next to the app name and notification. It helps your users identify your app when they receive a push notification. The app requires the presence of a PNG file and doesn't support other formats.
            • Large Icon - Appears on the right side of the notification in the non-expanded view, giving your users additional context of the notification. Large icons support only PNG file and can be a file in the app or a URL.
            • Sound - Select the sound options from the dropdown menu, similar to those in the iOS Configuration section.
          9. Use these options to customize the behavior and appearance of your Interactive buttons. Make sure your users are on SDK version 9.0 and later to see the buttons.
            • Label – Enter the text to display on the button. Each button must include a label, an icon, or both; otherwise, you’ll see an error when activating or validating the Journey.
              Note
Note Buttons appear in one line on the user’s device. Keep button labels short, especially if using two or three buttons on Android. Also, color may appear different if the contrast ratio is too low for dark or light themes on the user’s device.
            • Identifier – Enter a unique name or ID to distinguish this button from others.
            • Icon – Optionally, select an icon to display with the label.
            • Open Behavior – Select how the button behaves when clicked.
If you create buttons in the message in Content Builder or Journey Builder, the SDK uses a Salesforce layout. This may look different from other notifications on different devices. This is applicable only for Android.

Salesforce captures button clicks and relays them as an ENS event. For more information, see MobilePush Event.

            Important
            Important

For iOS, you must select a valid button category in the Delivery Options section of the Journey Builder. Otherwise, buttons won’t appear on the user’s device. On Android, if you haven’t configured a button in the message, the app developer’s buttons may not show up if the category information is incorrect. However, this also depends on how the app developers handle the category in your mobile app.

          10. In the Design panel, you can optionally customize your button styles, such as font size, style, and color.
          11. For a subscriber-level preview of your message, click Subscriber Preview.
          12. Click Save.
This push message can now be pulled into a Journey Builder push notification activity. See Create the Push Notification Activity in Journey Builder.

Important Referencing other Content Builder content in blocks returns table and HTML wrappers instead of text. To reference this content, use code snippets. See ContentBlockbyID.
