Setting Up Parameters
UTM parameters help you measure how clicks from your messages relate to activities on your websites. After you set up these parameters, Marketing Cloud Engagement appends them to the URLs in your messages.
Channel Support
Links in your email messages include all the parameters that you set up in Parameter Manager, unless link tracking is disabled for the email address. In SMS activities, the Campaign Term, Campaign Content, and Subscriber ID parameters aren’t tracked.
URLs that include UTM parameters resemble this example.
https://www.example.com?utm_source=sfmc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=TestCampaign&utm_term=MyLink123&utm_content=123456&utm_id=f521708e-db6e-478b-9731-8243a692c2d5&sfmc_id=245678&sfmc_activityid=598741568
Parameter Information
This table lists the UTM parameters that Engagement can pass to Google Analytics.
| Parameter Key | Parameter Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Campaign Source | Use this configurable parameter to track the source of web activity. |
| utm_medium | Campaign Medium | This configurable parameter tracks which channels, such as email or SMS, drive the web activity. |
| utm_campaign | Campaign Name | Use this configurable parameter to identify a product promotion or strategic campaign. There are two options.
|
| utm_term | Campaign Term | This required nonconfigurable parameter analyzes individual links within messages. This parameter is populated with link alias text associated with the content asset. |
| utm_content | Campaign Content | This required nonconfigurable parameter tracks the effectiveness of an Engagement content asset. This parameter is populated with the content asset ID. |
| utm_id | Campaign ID | This required nonconfigurable parameter links activity within an Engagement journey and is populated with the journey ID. Engagement generates this parameter to link activity in Journey Builder. |
| sfmc_id | Subscriber ID | This nonconfigurable parameter is required to create persistent user IDs between Engagement and Google Analytics. |
| sfmc_activityid | Activity ID | This required nonconfigurable parameter is appended to every link in a journey for supported channels. When a subscriber clicks a link, Engagement passes this parameter to Google Analytics. The associated Google Analytics behavioral metrics are then reported for the specific activity in a journey. |
For more information about the UTM parameters that Google Analytics supports, see Collect campaign data with custom URLs in the Google Analytics documentation.
