WhatsApp Media Attachments in Marketing Cloud Engagement
To send a media message with WhatsApp, attach a media file in the message header. The recipient can open and save the attachment independently of the WhatsApp message. For all message types, you can include an image, document, or video file. You can include an audio file only with a session message.
Where to Store Your Media Files
You can attach files to your template and session messages from these locations.
- A publicly accessible URL
- Content Builder in your Marketing Cloud Engagement account (see Upload Files)
To attach a file from a separate website, include the full URL of the website. The website must be publicly accessible. To upload a file from Content Builder, review Upload Files. If the files aren’t available at send time, you receive an error.
File Size Limits
Depending on from where you attach your media files, different file formats and sizes are supported. Files larger than the maximum size aren’t sent.
| Media Type | File Format Supported | URL Maximum File Size | Content Builder Maximum File Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image | JPG or PNG | 5 MB | 5 MB |
| Document | 100 MB | 5 MB | |
| Video | MP4 | 16 MB | 5 MB |
| Audio (available only for session messages) | MP4 | 16 MB | 5 MB |
If you use a public media URL for audio, make sure that you meet these requirements.
- The link was created using a file transfer protocol (FTP) or secure file transfer protocol (SFTP).
- The media file has audio multipurpose internet mail extensions (MIME) types.
File Security
The WhatsApp server can only access publicly accessible URLs. Therefore, when using a media type that could contain a subscriber’s personal information, send only password-protected PDF links.
Files attached from your FTP site or an external URL aren’t scanned for viruses, so make sure that the file has no security issues.
