Shorten URLs in SMS Message
In MobileConnect and Journey Builder, shorten single and multiple links to reduce the size of an SMS message. You can use either Bitly or the Marketing Cloud Engagement link shortener. Bitly tracks the total clicks for all subscribers. The Engagement shortener tracks the total clicks and unique clicks per subscriber.
- Click Create Message.
- Select Outbound.
- Name the message.
- Select the short or long code to use.

If applicable, select a From Name.
A From Name sends your message to a customer’s mobile device as if your business is one of the customer’s contacts. Recipients can’t directly respond to messages from a From Name.
- Select Opt-Out Availability, if applicable.
- Select the send method.
- Select the audience or create a list.
- Enter the message text.

Select Automatically Shorten Links, and the method you want to use.
If you’re using the Engagement shortener, select Track Clicks to track
the user engagement metrics.
The Engagement shortener uses AWS to shorten links in messages and supports dynamic URLs.The Engagement shortener only shortens links that begin with
http://orhttps://. Don’t use special characters at the beginning of the links. Ensure there’s space before the URL unless the link is at the beginning of the message.If the message body includes an AMPscript, you can’t select Bitly. - Click OK.
- Enter the required information, and click Next.
- Review the message information.
- Set the delivery date and time.
- Schedule, send, or activate the message.
- Go to the Message Detail screen to view the user engagement metrics.
