| Item | Behavior in Marketing Cloud Engagement | Behavior in Marketing Cloud Next |
|---|---|---|
| Views and navigation | When users log in to a business unit, they see data in the context of that specific business unit, and act on objects from within that business unit. For example, only the journeys for a business unit are available when you log into a business unit. If you log into a different business unit, you see a different set of journeys. | Users don’t change contexts between business units. Instead, users always see all the data they have access to. Each item includes an indicator of which business unit it belongs to. When you create a campaign or a content item, you select a business unit to apply to it. For example, when you log in, you see the full list of segments across every data space your user has access to. |
| Number of business units | You can create an unlimited number of business units. | Each Marketing Cloud Engagement+ account includes two business units. More business units are available as an add-on, with a maximum of 50 business units. |
| Hierarchy | In Marketing Cloud Engagement, there’s a required hierarchy, with one parent and one or more child business units. The child business units can also have child business units of their own. Parent business units can manage and view data for child business units. | Marketing Cloud Next doesn’t have a hierarchy. A Salesforce user can be a member of several business units and can manage and view data within any business units they’re members of. For example, you can configure your business units so that your leadership team has complete insight into performance metrics across all business units, including Marketing Performance and Analytics. |
| Content management | Each business unit has a single space for its own content, which you can organize in folders. Each business unit can also access content shared from other business units that the user has access to. | Each business unit can have many distinct content workspaces. Each content workspace can have its own access-controlled Content Management System (CMS), and can share folders across workspaces in that same business unit. There’s no ability to share content across different business units. |
